When Yassin Kampung Seafood opened its first outlet in the heart of Marsiling last year, it quickly became quite a fan favourite with people who were looking for a place where they could go to enjoy not only an extensive menu of classic dishes but also a relaxed environment ala kampung style.
Well, good news for the people of the North! Yassin Kampung Seafood has opened its 2nd outlet at Admiralty and as expected, it retains the kampung charms and kampung flavours that made it famous in the first place. But hey, decor and vibes aside – we’re here to sample some of the food that people have been raving about.
The menu at Yassin Kampung Seafood is indeed VERY EXTENSIVE!! It’s got pretty much everything you’d expect including seafood, Tzi Char dishes, a wide variety of rice and noodles dishes plus a few surprises here and there too π
Tom Yum Soup is almost always a good start to a big meal especially when there’s seafood and Tzi Char involved am I right or am I right LOL Good mix of seafood and veggies in the Tom Yum Soup which is brimming with flavour. Extra points for serving it bubbling hot in a bubbling pot! (See what I did there)
This was the small size ($8.00) by the way which is definitely good for sharing. If you have a large group, get the bigger soup (wah wah wah I’m really on a roll here!) at $15.00.
They have other choices too by the way. Perhaps Beef or Chicken Soup might be more up your alley? More interesting ones include the Salted Vegetable Beancurd Soup, Seafood Bittergourd Soup, Soup Ekor and the Shark’s Fin Soup (no, it’s not actual shark’s fin okay!)
Here’s one for all you duck lovers (and those who wanna take a break from chicken!)
The Kampung Signature Duck is a stir-fry of smoked duck in an Asian-soy inspired sauce and even paired with some broccoli too.
As someone who quite enjoys duck, this was right up my alley. Actually, even if duck is not your thing, this is a good chance to give it a try.
Speaking of signature dishes…
Check out this one – the Kampung Durian Chicken is one of the most unique items on the menu! In fact, I don’t think I’ve ever seen it anywhere else LOL
When I first saw it on the table, I thought it was Salted Yolk Chicken (you can see the resemblance right) but then I noticed the actual durian fruit sitting right on top of the chicken π If you’re a durian lover, you’re probably gonna love this one lah safe to say. How does it taste like eh? Hmmmm do you remember an old school packet snack? It was a durian-flavoured corn snack (there was also a corn flavour too)? Well, this tastes very much like that.
Anyways, you have to admit – this is such an interesting dish to come across that you simply have to try it to believe it π
You’ve simply gotta have some veggies and they’ve got no less than 13 different options when it comes to vegetable dishes on the menu at Yassin Kampung Seafood. From Kailan to Bean sprouts to Broccoli to Kang Kong to Ladyfingers to Chap Chye and even Hotplate Beancurd!
We opted for the classic Baby Kailan Oyster Sauce which always hits the spot π
By the way, we enjoyed our dishes with some hot White Rice but please be reminded that you have a whole range of Rice and Noodle dishes to choose from too. We’re talking about Fried Rice dishes (we heard that their Cereal Fried Rice is sedap!) and also Noodles dishes (both fried and errr wet!) too.
The menu says Three Flavoured Fish but I’m sure we all recognize it as the all-time favourite Ikan Tiga Rasa! π
Wah wah wah I really enjoyed this one! Fresh Ikan Kerapu aka Grouper (they’ve also got Siakap aka Seabass) deep-fried so you get a nice crispy exterior but still plenty of juicy flesh underneath all that delicious sauce! Super mouth-watering! I always tell this joke when people order Ikan Tiga Rasa – people say that the 3 flavours are ‘sweet, sour and spicy’ but to me, if the dish is really good, then the 3 flavours are ‘sweet, sour and SEDAP’!
And let me confirm – this one is sedap giler!
In the end, all that was left was the bones… π
They’ve also got a few Steamed variations for you – Hong Kong Style, Teoche and Lemon Steamed Fish are listed on their menu. They’ve even got Curry Fish Head!
Did someone say Chili Crab? π
Definitely the quintessential seafood dish here in Singapore for sure. A hearty serving here and I really enjoyed mopping up that tasty sauce.
Totally regret not ordering some fried Mantou (which is on the menu!) π
They also have Black Pepper Crab too by the way. But when we go back, I would love to try two really interesting variations – Butter Milk with Salted Egg Yolk Crab and Fried Butter Garlic Crab!
And last but not least, another favourite with a lot of you – the BBQ Sambal Stingray.
A pretty standard serving here with juicy stingray that has been given that great BBQ treatment so you get that great smoky flavour. Paired with that spicy sambal and you have a winner!
Don’t forget to squeeze that lime! π
Other seafood options include Baby Squid (my favourite!), Hotplate Black Pepper/Sambal Sotong, Crispy Oat Sotong, Sotong Fritters (I think it’s You Char Kway Sotong), Sambal Lala and even Kerang Rebus.
We had quite lot to eat but as always, there’s room for dessert hehehe π
Something classic like Chendol always hits the spot. In fact, I’d say this was a very generous serving! Chendol, Chin Chow, Red Bean and even some Atap seeds sit atop a bed of shaved ice and plenty of creamy coconut milk! No wonder this is a legendary dessert!
PRO TIP – they have a version with DURIAN too!!! π
Here’s one that’s a bit more modern but also a very popular dessert for the past few years – Thai Coconut Ice Cream! The version at Yassin Kampung Seafood is definitely an upsized version LOL
On top of creamy Coconut Ice Cream, you have chendol, sweet corn, Atap seeds, actual coconut flesh and some crushed peanuts for good measure. And don’t underestimate this dessert – good for sharing okay! π
Even the drinks at Yassin Kampung Seafood are spectacular LOL
You’ll see familiar names like Super Cooler and Fizzy Lemon Ribena on the menu but there’s plenty of other stuff too (both hot and cold of course!). Interesting choices include the Wheatgrass Bandung (it tastes better than it sounds okay!) and also the 4 Layer Drink (which is half drink and half dessert to be honest) π
Fans of Alpokat will be pleased with the Avocado Chocolate Milkshake for sure. You can also have the non-Chocolate version too of course.
We were also impressed with the ordering system at Yassin Kampung Seafood (the Admiralty outlet) which is pretty much electronic. You can order without even getting out of your seat π
Just enter your selections into the iPad attached to your table and just wait for your food to arrive so you can begin your feast!
I read online and also received some feedback for you, our readers, about your experiences at the new Yassin Kampung Seafood outlet at Kampung Admiralty and how it may not have gone as well as you would have liked.
Maybe they were having teething issues when they first opened or maybe new staff that nee to brush up? I’m not too sure lah eh but when we visited, the crew was actually really friendly (even before we were identified as guests) and here’s to hoping that your next visits are better!
PS the new outlet is at Admiralty but their original outlet at Marsiling is still open as usual FYI!!! This one North side people win LOL here’s to wishing for an outlet in the East soon π *ahem ahem*
