MBK Thai

When you first read the title, you might be inclined to think that we’re posting about a makan place we may have encountered on our recent trip to Bangkok… But we assure you – MBK Thai is very much in Singapore! πŸ˜›

As a matter of fact, it’s nestled right in the heartlands of Tampines.

As usual, our beloved readers are the first on the ground and we received a few messages about MBK Thai about a month or so ago. It seems like Thai is the flavour of 2018 and it’s always great to have some variety. Even better when it’s right in the middle of our ‘hood LOL πŸ˜€

MBK Thai is actually pretty unassuming. You may even have passed by a few times and not realized it! Well, something else that most people seem to miss is that MBK Thai is 100% Muslim-owned (and they’re also in the midst of applying for Halal certification from what we understand!). They may not have a menu as large as some other places but they definitely cover the favourites.

Prawn Cake ($8.00)

A pretty popular choice when it comes to Starters is the Prawn Cakes. (Anything fried is always welcome LOL) But if that’s not your thing, they have other stuff on the menu too.

The ‘Snacks’ section also comprises of Thai Fish Cake (another hot fave), Spring Rools, Pandan Chicken, Mini Chicken Wings and Stuffed Chicken Wings too.

In the end, I think the Prawn Cakes were a good choice. Crisp, golden brown and best enjoyed while piping hot for maximum effect. This version has smaller chunks of prawns in there but you’ll definitely get them as you go along.

And I’m guessing I don’t have to remind you to enjoy these with the sweet Thai Chili Sauce that comes with. By the way, these are pretty generous in size so definitely one for sharing.

Red Tom Yum Seafood ($8.00)

Hey hey hey you’ve gotta have some Tom Yum right?

MBK Thai has a few Soups and Curries on their menu. Classics like Tom Yum are always popular right? They’ve got both the Red and the Clear types and you can choose between Seafood and Chicken. You could also go for Tom Kha (which is the version with coconut milk) or some Green or Yellow Curry.

The Red Tom Yum Seafood had a really good flavour but it was not as spicy as we were used to with our Tom Yum soups. But I guess this is a good thing if you’re not used to extra spicy flavours and it’s still good for the kids too. But alas, if you’re looking for that kick to the face that comes with spicy food, then you can always let them know to make it extra spicy when you order okay πŸ˜€

Steamed Seabass Lime Sauce ($24.00)

They have a more than decent Seafood menu at MBK Thai including aΒ  couple of fish dishes. The Deep Fried Seabass seems to have more options – it comes served with either Sambal, Thai Chili, Sweet Sour Sauce, Mango Salad or Garlic Sauce.

We opted for the Steamed Seabass which came served on on of those heating plates (which is always nice! Keeps the food hot while you dig in!). I used to love Soy Sauce when it came to Steamed Fish but ever since my Darling Wife introduced me to the Lime Sauce variety, that’s normally our choice these days.

Tangy, spicy and brimming with great flavour thanks to the lime, chili and garlic! Definitely highly recommended!

Other seafood dishes they have include Basil Squid/Prawn, Sambal Squid/Prawn, Deep Fried Squid, Squid Lemon Sauce, Glass Noodle Prawn and Sweet & Sour Prawns too. (Next time, gonna try the Deep Fried Squid for sure!).

Cashew Nut Chicken ($8.00)

When it comes to Thai food, our usual order is the Basil Chicken but we decided to try something a little different this time and it turned out to be the right choice!

The Cashew Nut Chicken was really yummy! Kinda like a cross between Kung Po Chicken and Sweet Thai Chili so you get this sweet and sour and salty stir fry of joy. Addictive to the max!

You might also consider Garlic Chicken, Black Pepper Chicken or Prik Kaeng Chicken (kinda a little like curry flavour) but trust us – try this Cashew Nut Chicken at least once okay! Oh, and they have Beef variations too.

Actually right, we gave some feedback about maybe having some Set Meals or something like that. Maybe for lunch or something you know. For example – they have like Basil Chicken but it’s like a serving for 2-3 pax to share. It would be great if they had like a set where it’s a plate of rice with a single serving of basil chicken and maybe a fried egg. Settle the kettle! But let’s wait and see lah okay πŸ˜€

Kang Kong Fai Daeng ($7.00)

For those of you who have been to Thailand or are very familiar with Thai cuisine, you might recognize this dish – Pad Pak Bung Fai Daeng – which happens to be one of the most common and popular staple dishes. It’s relatively cheap to prepare and more than tasty for sure – a great addition to any meal.

After all, sometimes, simple is best!
Enjoy this with the rest of your dishes and a nice plate of hot white rice FUYOH confirmed power!

Mango Sticky Rice ($5.00)

I *heart* Mango Stick Rice! (geddit geddit)

You’ve got a relatively easy time when it comes to the desserts – they’ve got 2 on the menu πŸ˜€
One of them happens to be a classic. Hmmmm… in fact, both are classics lah.

The Mango Sticky Rice is actually pretty good. Extra marks for serving the sticky rice warm. That plus the coconut cream plus the sweet mangoes equals to a dessert fir enough to close off a great meal!

Red Ruby ($3.00)

The Red Ruby was actually a bit of a disappointment. I think maybe they were not expecting the order lah so many not enough time to prepare or something LOL

The ‘Red Rubies’ which is actually water chestnut with a glutinous coat were hard (like.. frozen hard). But I think the weirdest part was that the ice was so.. chunky. Normally the ice is shaved (like Ice Kachang) so it melts and you can slurp it all down. I’m not really into chewing or biting ice but if you’re into that then this might be the thing for you πŸ˜›

I think overall, MBK Thai has a pretty decent selection on their menu. Definitely enough to satisfy your Thai cravings for sure I’d say. Some of the dishes may be considered on the slightly pricey side but I think overall it’s not bad lah. Hopefully we might see some Set Meals or something like that soon!

PS in case you’ve been wondering – they actually DID name this place after the famous shopping centre! No need to wonder what MBK really stands for okay πŸ˜€
