[OSAKA] Tsuki No Odori – HALAL Yakitori & More!

Hello everyone! 皆さん、こんにちは! I know it’s so lambat but we still have a few posts pending from our trip to Japan awhile back! Sorry lah so lambat!! But anyways these makan places are all around lah so hopefully you’ll find the info useful ?

We visited this makan place when they were located at the famous Dotonbori area! But it seems like they have since moved! The good news is that they are still serving delicious and Halal food! So if some of you visited their old restaurant before, please take note – they have moved!

Ohhhhh yeeaaaaaah! Tsuki No Odori (which literally translates to ‘Dance of the Moon’) is a very laid-back jazzy nook with a very chill vibe. They used to offer only a limited Halal menu but with the assistance of the local Kobe Mosque, they decided that Halal was the way to go!

What they specialize in is actually CHICKEN! There’s even a certificate that they’ve gone training and are specially trained in cuisine where chicken is the star! I mean, it must be pretty cool to be a Master of Chicken right? 😛 I personally spoke to Teppei-san (who is the owner and head chef) who explained everything to me. Seeing them work in the kitchen was mighty impressive!

Remind me to tell you a funny story about Chef Teppei-san later okay 😀
For now, it’s time for the makan!

Yakitori Skewer Plate Set (¥2100)

There was no way I was going to pass up the chance to enjoy some HALAL Yakitori while in Japan!

Halal Yakitori can be notoriously hard to find. After all, it is commonly served in Izakaya (Japanese bars) and almost always have some pork involved. At Tsuki No Odori, Halal Yakitori is a reality! They have plenty to choose from (most not even on the menu!) but a good starter would be the Yakitori Set.

It comes with some Yakitori, Chicken Karaage (Japanese Fried Chicken) plus some salad, rice and even Salty Caramel Gelato for dessert!

The grilled Chicken & Green Onion Yakitori was THE BOMB! Simple and tasty is always the best 😀
And don’t forget – they have quite a few to choose from that you may not see on the menu (you might have spotted some in the video!) so ask the staff if you’re interested okay!

Miso Hot Pot

Kimchi (¥380)
Chicken Meat & Green Onion Tempura Yakitori

On the menu, the instructions for the Chicken Hot Pot are simple –

“How To Eat –
1. Please put all the ingredients in the pot.
2. When it comes to boil, it’s ready to eat.

LOL Can’t get any simpler than that lah I think. They have 2 types to choose from by the way – Miso and Spicy! I reckon many will probably opt for the Spicy version but we went for the Miso version.

It’s got quite a few goodies in there including chicken, mushrooms, tofu, deep fried tofu skin and assorted vegetables. You can choose the serving size (minimum order is for 2 pax) and everything is brought and cooked right at your table! Served with hot white rice maximum kick! If you order the set, it also comes with extra goodies including the Chicken Meat & Green Onion Tempura Yakitori (which you can also purchase separately at ¥150 per skewer).

We also added a side order of Kimchi 😛

FYI for the Spicy Hot Pot, it’s a WHOLE chicken in there so you can prepare for some good feasting! Perhaps especially when it’s cold weather outside 😀

Chicken Steak Plate Set (¥2300)

I actually ordered this because I saw them preparing this in the kitchen for SOMEONE ELSE’S order and was so impressed by how much effort they put into just frying up this chicken cutlet that I decided this was gonna be super sedap. I was not wrong!

The Chicken Steak was tender and tasty! It comes with a delicious brown gravy but the flavour from the fried garlic makes this dish really pop. Comes with salad, rice and dessert for the set.

This handsome fella is Chef and Owner at Tsuki No Odori – Teppei Tokunaga!
(I think they guy waving in the back maybe also owner ah from photos on their IG)

They were really friendly and I had a nice chat with him about the restaurant. You can tell they’re really passionate about not only serving out the best food that they can but also making it inclusive by going Halal and Muslim-friendly. This is so they can share their Japanese cuisine and culture with everyone 😀

And as promised – the funny story about me and Chef Teppei…
So I was wearing this t-shirt while I was there.. a t-shirt I had bought from Bangkok and it has a drawing of a rose and some Japanese characters on it.

The whole time I was there, Chef Teppei kept looking and me. After having the chat with him, I think he finally decided to save me some face and asked me “Do you know what the Japanese writing on your shirt says?”. Being the ignorant shopper that I was, I simply bought the t-shirt because it looked nice.

He told me “It says ‘Gangster’ on your shirt” ???
We had a big laugh about it of course. But I was super embarrassed lah! I tried my best to cover up the writing with my bag straps on the way home LOL 😛

These are the memories from Japan that I will cherish. Great food with great company, meeting the friendly locals and exploring all that they have to offer ❤

(And learning my lesson to check foreign writing on clothing before buying :P)
