[TOKYO] Honolu Ramen – A Quick Stop for HALAL Ramen!

Hello everyone! 皆さん、こんにちは! I know it’s been awhile but we still have a few posts pending from our trip to Japan awhile back! Sorry lah so lambat!! But anyways these makan places are all around lah so hopefully you’ll find the info useful 😀

During our first trip to Japan, we made plans to visit Honolu Ramen but we got stuck (just like this post!). Well, it was still a bit of a squeeze for this trip but we made it and managed to sample this Halal Ramen which seems to be a big hit with the Muslim community in Japan!

Th first thing I noticed when we got there (and even BEFORE we got there when we checked out their Instagram account) is how popular this place is with the youth. Seems like a majority of the clientele there are students (mainly from Indonesia and Malaysia). Even the staff are mostly from Indonesia. This is actually a big plus because you won’t have any communication issues!

Anyways, you know the drill right? Purchase your Ramen selection via the machine at the entrance and pass it on to the staff. Take a seat and your food will eventually arrive at your table 😀

Spicy Yakiniku BBQ Ramen (¥1380)

Among the 8 of us, we ordered 2 different types of Ramen (because all dah lapar gila LOL). An obvious choice for many will be the appetizing Spicy Yakiniku BBQ Ramen! And this seems like a big hit with the Honolu Ramen regulars too! Along with the Spicy Ramen (which I assume is minus the beef).

Springy Ramen noodles swim in a chicken broth that’s been prepared and cooked for over 8 hours. You’re guaranteed of a full-flavoured kick when you slurp down the delicious broth! The main topping for the Spicy Yakiniku BBQ Ramen includes tender slices of Beef Yakiniku plus some spicy minced chicken that I’m sure all you spicy food lovers will enjoy.

It’s a pretty straight-forward bowl of Ramen with that spicy kick. SHIOK!! ?

Special Rich Chicken Soy Sauce Ramen (¥1080)

After trying the ‘Noko Tori Shio Ramen’ at Ayam-YA, I’m always on the lookout for EXTRA RICH broth when it comes to Ramen, I decided on the Special Rich Chicken Soy Sauce Ramen which seemed to fit the bill as closely as possible.

A classic serving of Ramen complete with sliced chicken plus bamboo shoots and a boiled egg on the side (you can purchase extra egg for ¥100 by the way!). Definitely a very hearty broth here especially compared to the Spicy Ramen. Not sure if it matches the level at Ayam-YA but for me, this one hit the spot especially with the cold weather outside 😛

There’s plenty of other dishes for you to choose from their extensive menu. Check out the Fried Chicken Ramen, Curry Rice and even Tom Yam Ramen too! But I have to say that I feel prices is a bit on the high side. Quite surprising considering what a popular hang-out spot this is for students. I’m of course comparing to other Halal Ramen places we’ve visited in Japan.

Honolu Fried Chicken (¥580)

For a side dish, we decided on the Honolu Fried Chicken (almost went for the Gyoza!!). Deep fried chicken Karaage (cutlet) is always welcome 😛 They also have a spicy version but we ordered this for the kids as well so we opted for the non-spicy version.

And by the way – to emphasize the Indonesian influence, they also sell Sosro Teh Botol here 😛 (and they even have an outlet in Jakarta too lah!)

I guess I can see why this is such a popular place with the youngsters. It’s pretty cool to hangout there with your friends for some Ramen and laughs after school. The outlet we visited in Ebisu was a bit campy though especially after the narrow staircase climb 😛 But a big plus is that they have a small prayer space!

When you go to their website and their social media channels, you’ll notice they have several outlets. BUT PLEASE TAKE NOTE that only certain outlets are Muslim-friendly! Based on the information we have for their outlets in Japan, the outlets in Ebisu (Tokyo) and Nanba (Osaka) serve a Muslim-friendly menu (other outlets serve non-Halal meats).
