Flaming Spice – More Than Just Mamak Cuisine!

Flaming Spice!! Some of our readers dropped us messages telling us to check out a new makan place that has just received its Halal certification awhile ago. But to be honest, we were a bit confused… In these messages, some were recommending we try the Mamak food there. Some were recommending the Tom Yum. Some said to try the Western. Errrrr so many different cuisines… were they all talking about the same place?

Only when we visited Flaming Spice did we realize that all of them were right! This place had SO MANY different things to choose from on their menu! And while we knew we would not be able to cover them all at one sitting, we decided to try our best and spread our choices out πŸ˜€

Flaming Spice is actually a collaboration between 2 names which y’all are probably familiar with. Flaming Spice is actually brought to you byt the same geniuses behind Casuarina Curry and Gayatri! So y’all know they know what they’re doing! (Yes, they have their famous Fish Head Curry on the menu too!)

As you will see, it really is quite a FUSION of flavours here.

Flaming Commando ($8.00)

We went straight for one of their Signature Starters – the Flaming Commando!
(Yeah, I was expecting it to come with literal flames too LOL)

This is a mix of tofu, potatoes, sausage, fishcake and fried ikan bilis (anchovies) all mixed with Flaming Spice’s very own special sambal mix. And it was actually REALLY tasty! It was mildly spicy (I think you can ask for extra spicy) but had a great flavour going. Think of it as kind of like a salad. Come to think of it, it was kinda like a Sambal Goreng sans the tempeh πŸ˜› Definitely worth a try!

Tom Yum Prawn

This one came highly recommended by our readers – the Tom Yum Soup! They have a choice of either Seafood or Prawn (we went for the latter) and you can even choose between a ‘clear’ soup or the version with coconut milk.

Apparently, the ‘clear’ version was the one most people were raving about. Good flavour although you will probably want to ask for extra spicy if you’re the type that loves a burning sensation with your Tom Yum Soup. Generous serving of seafood and vegetables along with this Thai favourite. Good for sharing as you indulge in other dishes!

They’ve got a few other dishes you might consider too including Salted Egg Prawns, Steamed/Fried Seabass and Thai Basil Chicken to name a few.

Tandoori Platter

You’ll see plenty on the menu including Thai, Western (we’ll get to that later) and even Fusion here and there. But as expected, you’re gonna get your Mamak favourites on the menu too!

Yes, they’ve got their Pratas and their Murtabaks (which we heard were actually really awesome and a MUST TRY!) and plenty more but we could not resist some good ol’ Tandoori! And so, we tried something that allowed us to sample a bit of everything.

Lamb Sheek Kebab
Fish Tikka
Tandoori Prawns
Chicken Tikka

You’ve gotta love that smoky flavour that comes with Tandoori. The meats get tender and flavourful! Especially when enjoyed with the yoghurt and mint sauces that come with.

Fish Tikka, the classic Chicken Tikka, Lamb Sheek Kebab and the really sedap Tandoori Prawns are great choices! I actually wish that we had also tried the Tandoori Chicken too! πŸ˜€

Oh! We almost forgot the best part!

Butter Naan ($3.50)
Garlic Naan ($3.50)
Butter Chicken ($8.00)

What goes great with Tandoori? Naan! And a few extras too πŸ˜›

Garlic Naan and Butter Naan are like automatic orders for us when we have Tandoori! And these are almost always enjoyed with some Butter Chicken! Great combination of flavours and the Flaming Spice versions of these dishes are really good. Other Naan choices include Cheese and even Kashmiri Naan too.

Normally we also have some Paneer (Cottage Cheese) to go along. They have quite a few varieties on the menu including Paneer Butter Masala, Khadai Paneer and Paneer Matar. Plenty of others to try as well!

Grilled Cajun Chicken ($10.50)

I think I was probably most impressed with the Western selection at Flaming Spice. I mean, I knew the Mamak selection was gonna be awesome plus Tandoori and Thai food actually go hand in hand there. But it’s not often you see such a wide Western selection.

We tried the Grilled Cajun Chicken which was delicious! It comes on this hot pan (which may not be sizzling but makes a difference lah with the residual heat) and comes complete with veggies and fries too. The chicken was seasoned well and had a great flavour. It was grilled to perfection – tender and juicy plus a nice charred exterior!

Other Western selections include the Fish & Chips, Grilled Norwegian Salmon, Lamb Rack and they even have Steak and Surf & Turf too! Oh wait, we forgot to mention the Pastas and Burgers LOL

Trios Mini Burgers
Shrooms Cheese Burger ($10.50)

Mac & Cheese ($8.00)

They’ve got Beef, Chicken and Fish Burgers for you to choose from. They even have these mini Sliders which I personally think are great for the kids to share. Best enjoyed hot and with fries! πŸ˜€

If you’re a fan of pasta, they’ve got a few to choose from too. Classics like Aglio Olio (with mushrooms!), Turkey Bacon Carbonara, Beef Bolognaise and Seafood Marinara are always good choices. We tried the Mac & Cheese which is made with THREE cheeses! So you’re guaranteed creamy, cheesy goodness! Great not just for the kids but for adults too!

But what I would REALLY like to try is their Flaming Quesadillas!! Maybe next time!

Sweet Lassi ($4.50)
Longan Tootie Fruity & Lychee Spin

The drinks menu is just as extensive as the food menu! LOL!
They’ve got all sorts of fancy stuff like Ice Blended, Fruit Juices, Milkshakes, drinks like Milo Dinosaur, Black Spider & White Spider etc and even Tower drinks for sharing in a group too.

But our PRO TIP: Have a Lassi and/or a Kopi when you’re at Flaming Spice. POWER!
And of course, be sure to sample some of their desserts too! πŸ˜€

Whether you’re dining solo or with a group, I think you’ll find Flaming Spice a really good choice. They’ve got an extensive menu so everyone gets a good selection (especially if everyone each feels like wanna makan something different). The decor is really nice and they even have a great event space on the 2nd floor! Definitely worth checking out.

You know ah… all that food we ate and we actually barely scratched the surface. The next time we visit Flaming Spice, we have a long list of stuff that we want to try next. This includes some of their Goreng-Gorengs, Satay Murtabak, Lamb Briyani and definitely some desserts.

But top of the list is their famous Fish Head Curry for sure! πŸ˜›
