สวัสดี ครับ and are you ready for some more makan!?
Great! Because it’s Time For Thai! No, seriously – we’re not telling you the time. That’s literally the name of the place! Time For Thai! 😛
It must have been quite a long time since I had visited the Bukit Timah area because the last time I did, this place was not even there yet. Well, in no time at all, Time For Thai has made quite a name for itself by serving up some really tasty and authentic Thai cuisine!
I know we hear a lot of places saying the same thing about serving up the most authentic Thai food etc etc.
But in this case, they’re really not kidding. There are some dishes on here that even we had not come across before!
I know we are more inclined to order familiar Thai dishes when we see them on the menu right? Well, that’s actually one of the big differences at Time For Thai – they have quite a few unique dishes that you may not have seen very often or perhaps may have passed over in the past.
Case in point – the Prawn Cakes. Yes, it’s true. We normally order the Thai Fish Cake (which they also have on the menu btw) but we’re going with something a little different this time.
The Prawn Cakes have a crispy breadcrumb coating which gives it a nice crunch when you chomp down. But within, there’s some great tasting filling including actual prawn bits in there. All best enjoyed with the Thai Sweet Chili dipping sauce that comes with!
There are no less than 12 Appetizers and Salads on the menu so you’ll be spoiled for choice for sure. Favourites like Mango/Papaya Salad and Pandan Leaf Chicken present and accounted for but don’t be afraid to try something new!
If you have been following us long enough, you’d know that one of my favourite Thai dishes is the Shrimp Paste Fried Rice (especially when we go to Phuket!!) but I made a conscious decision this time to practice what I preach and try something new – hence the Olive Fried Rice 😀
Okay lah to be honest, both dishes are actually quite similar in the respect that they’re both served with almost similar accompaniments. We’ve got chicken, onions, cucumber, and nuts (Cashews in this case!). The most noticeable absentee is the egg/omelette but that’s fine right.
And of course, the biggest difference is that the rice is fried with olives instead of shrimp paste. This is what gives it a unique hue and a vert distinct flavour. Highly recommended to try this as a good alternative to the plain white rice you normally order to enjoy with other dishes.
But they do also have other options like Thai Sticky Rice, Green Curry Fried Rice and Crabmeat Fried Rice among others. And that’s not even counting the noodles section yet LOL
And speaking of trying something different…
When you go out to eat Thai food right, how many of y’all order Tom Yum Soup?
*97.9% of the people raise their hand* 😛
Okay lah there’s no doubt that Tom Yum Soup is the quintessential Thai soup to be enjoyed but in keeping with the theme of being adventurous, we decided why not try the Geng Som Soup. But first, we ask the question – what is a Geng Som Soup anyways?
Well, it’s actually a spicy and sour soup similar to Tom Yum but I’d say with less tang. Flavour-wise I’d liken it to the Indonesian soup Sayur Asem but the Geng Som is much much more bolder and robust. Full of flavour and definitely going to add flavour to the other dishes you order.
This is probably the section of the menu where you will face the toughest decisions…
The Seafood section 😛
Steamed? Fried? Spicy? Sour? Which type of seafood?? *head explodes*
LOL there are just about 16 different seafood dishes ranging including squid, prawns and fish and also a myriad of flavours such a Sweet & Sour, Tamarind, Curry etc.
We went with a classic – the Steamed Seabass with Spicy Lemon Sauce is always a delight. Fresh fish steamed with a spicy and tangy gravy FUYOH sedap giler!
Despite all the new dishes we tried at Time For Thai, we could not resist trying a dish that needs no introduction – the Stir Fry Basil Chicken 😛
Minced chicken that’s been stir-fried with spices, garlic, chili and that amazing Thai Holy Basil that gives you that one-of-a-kind flavour that’s hard to beat! Best enjoyed with hot rice or order to share also can!
Onto desserts and Mango Sticky Rice, as always, seems like a great choice 😀
That warm glutinous rice bathed in creamy coconut cream paired with sweet mangoes? WINNER!
But having said that… despite Mango Sticky Rice and all it’s glory… we found a worthy contender!
Have y’all ever had Dough Fritters with Sangkaya before?
I know some of you may have done so. We’ve seen it in JB and KL but not in SG so far. Until now that is.
The best part – the Time For Thai team makes everything from scratch. From the crisp fluffy fritters to the silky smooth and delicious sangkaya! This one you really have to try it yourselves to believe it lah!
You’re obviously going to wanna wash down all that food with some refreshing beverages and they definitely have that too at Time For Thai 😀
It was a really hot afternoon when we visited o iced drinks were definitely on the cards. I could not resist ordering my favourite Iced Lemongrass drink which was super refreshing as always. But instead of going for the (also) usual Thai Milk Tea, Mein Bruder went for what has become his new favourite Thai drink.
It’s called Nom Yen and immediately recognized thanks to its unique pink hue. This drink may be mistaken for a Thai version of Bandung at first glance but make no mistake – this is not your average pink drink LOL
I was scratching my head trying to figure out what its primary flavour was. When we were in Bangkok, I saw the street vendors making it by pouring a red syrup and milk into ice hence the result. A bit of research later, I learned that the syrup is actually ‘Sala syrup’. And guess what Sala is – Buah Salak!!
Well, if that’s not interesting enough to get you to try Nom Yen, then at least know that’s it’s as tasty as it is unique. อร่อยมาก!
Guess what? Despite having quite a fair bit to eat during our first visit to Time For Thai, we barely scratched the surface of what the menu has to offer LOL I guess that obviously means we have to plan a few visits back. It’s a good thing they are open late for supper til 3am!! 😛
As expected, they have a whole team of Thai chefs working the flaming woks in the back so you’re pretty much assured of authentic Thai flavours. So the next time you’re itching for a Thai meal, make your way down to Time For Thai and try out something new. You might just find your new favourite 😀
