The Great Mischief

Solomillo Con Queso De Cabra ($10.00)

I know y’all are already making plans for the weekend right right right ๐Ÿ˜› So here’s a new spot we’d recommend for you and your clique to chillax, enjoy some good food and have some good times. We present – The Great Mischief!

The Great Mischief is actually the brainchild of The Black Hole Group – the geniuses which brought you some of your other favourite makan spots including Afterwit, Santap and Working Title – so you know they know what they’re doingย  ๐Ÿ˜€

In fact, an added charm factor to The Great Mischief is that it’s actually part of the The Great Madras – a very picture-esque, Wes Anderson-y looking, classy boutique hotel on the outskirts of Serangoon. I know I can’t really describe the vibe here with just words but trust me – once you get there with good company, you’re probably gonna wanna lepak there for awhile LOL

So what can you expect to be served at The Great Mischief? Tapas!

Like their other concept eateries, The Black Hole Group has a knack for bringing us a touch of the unique and unexpected when it comes to their eateries. This time, they bring a touch of Catalan-inspired heavenly flavours with a whole array of Tapas (more than 20 different types to choose from!) and some pretty unique mocktails to wash it all down.

The idea is to order (more than) a few things off the menu so that everyone shares and gets a little taste here and there. Tapas servings are traditionally not very bigย  because they are, after all – snacks.

We tried just about half of what they have on the menu at The Great Mischief so let’s break down what we have so far shall we ๐Ÿ˜€

Coca Bread ($5.00)

Bikini Party ($9.00)

Many cultures across the globe have bread as an integral component of any meal. And in most cases, including in Catalonia, it’s one of the best ways to start a feast! ๐Ÿ˜€

The Coca Bread is a classic – some tasty bread served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. A common serving you may have noticed with other cuisines too I’m sure. Well, common but definitely always welcome.

We also tried one of their signature top sellers – the Bikini Party. Turkey bacon and mozzarella cheese are sandwiched between a couple of slices of buttery Brioche. And if that wasn’t enough to get your mouth watering, they add a decadent Black Truffle paste which gives it a really great earthy kick in the flavour department.

To be honest, I’m still trying to figure out why they call it (oddly) the Bikini Party. But hey, they can call it whatever you want if it’s this tasty.

Bunuelos De Bacalao ($9.00)

One of the few seafood (in fact, the ONLY fish) Tapas on the menu is the Bunuelos De Bacalao. This one is probably going to be an acquired taste for some people because it’s not quite what you may be used to.

It’s actually salted Cod fritters with a little Lemon Aioli drizzled over the top. While the Aioli does give it a hint of zest, what you’re going to get most is the briny flavour of the cod. Some (like me) may like it while some may not. I guess you’ll have to try it to find out which group you belong to.

Pollo Al Ajillo ($10.00)

Highly recommended is the Pollo Al Ajillo – fried chicken wings that have been marinated and doused with ‘Ajillo’ which is a concoction made with garlic, chili and oil. The result – SEDAP GILER!

To be honest with you, I had to control myself because I probably would have wiped the plate clean if I had my way LOL but hey hey hey we’re supposed to share lah! LOL Anyways there was plenty more to try.

Setas Con Crema Trufadas ($8.00)

Berenjenas Con Miel ($6.00)

With any of the stronger-flavoured Tapas, you might wanna pair it with something that is maybe a bit creamy or sweet so it can cut through the lingering flavours and then you can refresh and start again ๐Ÿ˜›

The Setas Con Crema Trufadas is a must-have to fan of mushrooms – cooked with a creamy garlic and truffle cream. Or perhaps the interesting Berenjenas Con Miel might tickle your fancy? Aubergine (aka Eggplant) is battered and given the deep fried goodness treatment for a crisp treat that is drizzled with some unique Acacia honey.

Patatas Bravas Trufadas ($8.00)

I reckon that the Patatas Bravas Trufadas is going to be a fixture on plenty of tables at The Great Mischief simply because it’s something that seems simple but is brimming with flavour and is actually really addictive.

Potatoes are fried and topped with some truffle oil before being finished off with shave Parmesan, aioli and some modest dollops of Salsa Brava. The result is probably one the best Tapas on the menu. One serving is not gonna be enough!

And what goes best with potatoes? Some meat, of course!

Solomillo Con Queso De Cabra ($10.00)

This was the best Tapas we had that night. Hands down. No doubt. For shizzle.

Solomillo Con Queso De Cabra features bottom sirloin served atop some toasted Batard and paired with some onions, red peppers, Salsa Brava and goat cheese. SEDAP GILER to the max!! I only wish they had more per serving LOL

At The Great Mischief, they actually have a few other ‘meaty’ Tapas including Carne Desmechada Sliders (pulled beef sliders) and the Rabo De Toro (Oxtail) which I’m dying to try but I guess we’ll save ’em for the next visit!

Halloumi Con Cranberry ($10.00)

The final featured Tapas is one that I also quite enjoyed (seems like I enjoyed a lot eh LOL) simply because it featured one of my favourite cheeses.. which is not only uncommon but also very underestimated.

The Halloumi Con Cranberry has some Halloumi cheese topped with some greens and some cranberry sauce. Halloumi is a great cheese not only because it is tasty but also, because of its high melting point, allows for it to be pan-fried and that adds to the flavour and texture.

I love the cheese but in my humble opinion, I’d lose the cranberry sauce simply because the tart flavour is too much of a contrast to the Halloumi. Or is it I’m being too protective of the Halloumi? ๐Ÿ˜›

Breezy ($8.00)

Funky ($7.00)

Verd ($6.00)

Risque ($8.00)

Nostalgic ($8.00)

Gleeful ($9.00)

They have about a dozen Mocktails on the menu and all of them are very creatively named to evoke the moods you get as you sit back and sip on these special concoctions. But fret not if you do not fancy the tails of mocks – they have some fresh juices, coolers and also hot beverages like coffee and teas abound. ๐Ÿ˜€

We’ve only covered like a fraction of the menu lah LOL I’m taking about like more than a dozen Tapas left for us to go back and try ๐Ÿ˜€ I guess it’s just about time to make plans for another visit for more Catalan-inspired treats!

After just a single visit to The Great Mischief, several things left with me…

I got the impression that this was a place that people would love to come to and just soak up the atmosphere. A place where you could come to with family and good friends to while away the time with some pretty good (and definitely unique) Tapas, some refreshing beverages and – most importantly – the idea that sometimes, you’ve just gotta take a bit of an escape albeit for a couple of hours.

And at The Great Mischief – escape you will ๐Ÿ™‚
