Taliwang Restaurant – Authentic Flavours of Lombok

Now, we may think we’ve experienced almost all sorts of cuisines these days. With the world literally at our table these days, it’s pretty easy to sample some of the world’s best. But we recently enjoyed a meal which reminded us that there’s still PLENTY more to be discovered and flavours to be savoured. Case in point – Taliwang Restaurant.

Nestled among the row of shops along Kandahar Street, you’ll find Taliwang Restaurant. And within its doors, you’ll experience authentic Lombok cuisine! Indonesian fare is a hot favourite with everyone. One of the reasons is that with each different region of Indonesia, the flavours and styles are always a little different. And we found this out firsthand at Taliwang Restaurant 😀

Things are gonna get ???

Drumlet Sambal Ijou ($9.00)

A good start to the feast is the Drumlet Sambal Ijou! This Taliwang take on a classic sambal pairs it with some fried chicken drumlets which is the perfect thing to pair it with.

Chomp down on these babies while it’s hot and enjoy the flavour and heat from the Sambal Ijou. And I know you may be thinking that some Sambal Ijou is not that spicy right? Well, this one (and a lot of other things on the menu) pack a good spicy kick! ?

Breaded Mussels ($11.00)

DID YOU KNOW – I’m not really a big fan of Mussels.. But these is not your average mussels dish!

The mussels are chopped up and mixed in with some spices and chilli before being coated in breadcrumbs and then given the #DeepFriedGoodness treatment. Tell that doesn’t sound AWESOME lah! Crisp on the outside and bursting with flavour on the inside. Best enjoyed piping hot and with the selection of dips that come along.

Satay Rembiga ($24.00)

Who can resist some Satay am I right? Especially if it’s Australian grass-fed Tenderloin!

Try the Satay Rembiga. The meat is super super tender! You get to enjoy not only the flavour of the beef but also that great chat flavour from the bakar-ing of the Satay. Served with some Tempeh Goreng and veggies on the side. And oh! Don’t forget the Satay gravy!

This is the part where I tell you – this Satay gravy is SPICY!!! ???
Don’t underestimate this humble peanut gravy LOL it compliments the Satay well but it was also one of the spiciest things we had during our meal at Taliwang!

Sweet Potato Fries ($8.00)

I know that this one seems out of place but Taliwang also has some Western selections on the menu. This includes pasta, favourites like Fish & Chips, Steak and of course, Sweet Potato Fries.

This is perfect for when you’re dining in a group and some may be in the mood for something different 🙂

Ayam Bakar Taliwang ($14.00 for 1/2 Chicken)

Onto the Mains! And what spectacular mains there are! 😀

First up is the eponymous dish that is the signature at Taliwang – the Ayam Bakar Taliwang. This is actually an iconic dish from Lombok and while you may sometimes see a fried version, this grilled version gets tops marks.

The chicken is char-grilled to perfect tenderness while still retaining that juicy bite. The Taliwang sauce is not only used to marinate the chicken but also as a basting sauce to you get maximum Taliwang flavour. Hints of spices paired with the gravy on the side is bound to be a hit with many. Enjoy with Pecel and hot white rice!

Ikan Bakar Taliwang ($35.00)

If you’re in the mood for seafood, maybe the Ikan Bakar Taliwang might be up your alley.

It’s got those great Taliwang flavours but this time you can enjoy it with a fresh whole Red Snapper (Ikan Merah). The sweet and firm flesh of the fish are a great contrast to the bold flavours of the Taliwang sauce. You’ll soon find yourself licking your fingers are you slowly pick the fish all the way down to the bones 😛

Want more seafood?

Udang Bakar ($22.00)

It was a tough choice between the Udang Belado and the Udang Bakar but in the end, we could not resist that sweet, sticky, spicy chili kicap :P?

The Tiger Prawns were super fresh and grilled to perfection (Wah! The guy doing the bakar-ing that day has the skills lah!). If you’re like me and don’t like to peel prawns, these are already butterflied so it’s easy to eat and of course, sedap giler! I thought the chili kicap was also going to be on the extreme side of spicy but it was a good mix of sweet and spicy 🙂

Besides the prawns, they also have other seafood like Cumi-Cumi Bakar and Salted Egg Calamari on the menu too.

Terong Bakar ($8.00)

Tempeh Goreng ($4.00)

You’ll probably be enjoying your main dishes with white rice so it’s always nice to have some side dishes to add to the feast. A couple of choices we’d like to recommend may seem simple but they are classics.

I think Terong (Brinjals) get a bad wrap from most people. They’re really tasty lah okay! 😀 The Terong Bakar is a great example and the Sambal Belado makes it even more worthwhile. You also can’t go wrong with some crisp Tempeh Goreng (plus chili kicap for dipping!)

Chendol with Coconut Ice Cream ($10.00)

Of course, there’s always space for tasty desserts and refreshing beverages to complete the feast am I right? Both Asian and Western inspired desserts plus a plethora of hot and cold drinks to choose from!

We had the Chendol with Coconut Ice Cream for a creamy and sweet end to our meal. The ice-cream had a great flavour of coconut and was further enhanced by the bits of gula melaka! Chendol, Red Bean, Chin Chow and slices of Nangka (Jackfruit) complete this beauty.

As for the beverages, take your pick of hot and cold. You’ve got the classics but take a chance on something exciting like the Spicy Habanero Mango (don’t worry it’s not spicy lah) where you get hints of chili with every sip. If you wanna match your meal to your drink, can’t go wrong with some Sosro Teh Botol too 😛

Whatever you choose, you’ve got quite a meal awaiting at Taliwang for you. Whether it’s a small, quiet dinner or a big family dinner – there’s something for everyone here. And after makan, can jalan-jalan around the Arab Street area which is always nice 😀
