If you like your makan to be not just tasty but also pretty enough for a picture, then you’re gonna wanna put Spatula on your list of places to visit. Instagram-mable dishes galore! And it’s not just desserts they’re dealing in – they’ve now introduced an expanded menu with brunch favourites!
We’ve seen hip and trendy cafes aplenty in the past few years. Spatula has actually made quite a name for themselves thanks to their gorgeous cake creations and sinfully sweet desserts. After a few locations swaps, they’re settled back down in the heart of Arab Street.
Their expanded menu now features dishes for both kids and kids at heart plus a plethora of desserts, sweets and shakes to jazz up any Instagram feed π
Choosing something from their new Brunch section of the menu could actually prove to be a challenge for some. Mainly because there are so many good choices! I’ve heard plenty of good (and crisp) compliments about their Crossaintwich range (Meatball Sub, Chicken Sausage or Egg Mayo but I decided to follow the glutton within me and went for the Brunch Platter π
The Brunch Platter features all your breakfast platter mainstays – a pair of grilled chicken sausages, some Scrammy Eggs plus sauteed spinach and tomatoes on the side. The bonus round is a serving of Cinnamon French Toast complete with powdered sugar and maple syrup!
This was actually a very hearty serving so don’t underestimate it! Might even be good to share and order a 2nd dish to share as well! The more the merrier!
Their Mains are equally enticing with a number of Pasta dishes like Baked Lasagna, Alfredo and Beef Bolognese Pastas on the line-up. I went for one of their Pizza Toasts to have a try. And in case you’re wondering – is it a pizza or a toast? Well, kinda both lah if you think about it LOL!
So they take some Multigrain bread and top it off with goodies like sliced chicken sausage and this (pretty) spicy tomato base. Top it off with some cheese and give it the ol’ toaster treatment for a nice melt on the top and crisp at the bottom.
And while the tomato base may not be spicy enough to ruffle the feathers of seasoned spice veterans (aka hantu chili), it’s actually spicier than I expected! May not be suitable for some kids so maybe choose something for them from the Kids’ Menu instead:D
Don’t even start with me on the Desserts section of the menu at Spatula… because we’ll spend a few hours going through it together π
So many choices! And after all, Spatula is famed for their sweet treats. Their popular faves like waffles, ice-cream sundaes or perhaps a milkshake for you? Trust me – I considered them all. In the end, I settled on something that I thought was pretty unique because it’s not a dessert you see at many other places.
Bananas Foster is actually quite a classic dessert. You’ve got caramelized bananas in a butter-toffee sauce with a scoop of Vanilla ice-cream to tie everything in. The slightly-charred and smoky flavour from the bananas and butter sauce go really well together against the creaminess of the ice-cream!
Doctor has been telling me to eat more fruits anyways (but I don’t think this is what he had in mind :P)
Okay so I caved in and got myself a Milkshake too π
They’ve got some really tempting ones like Nutella, Speculoos (which I really love), Banana Cream Pie (if only I didn’t have the Bananas Foster) and even a Bandung one. But I kinda like my shakes to be a little over the top and the Funfetti Shake seemed to fit.
It’s a Bubblegum flavoured ice-cream and it even has some of those fruity cereal bits blended in there too. Okay so maybe I won’t wear pastel but I’d definitely drink it lah.
All in all, if you’re a fan of a chill vibe, good food and a place to catch up with friends then Spatula should fit you just nice. Oh, and don’t forget the selfies!
PS ask about their event space upstairs! Great for birthdays, engagements or just general light-hearted fun π
