Pondok Pantai Timur – My #1 Favourite Ayam Penyet!

I LOVE AYAM PENYET!
Okay lah, that’s not exactly accurate. I love THIS Ayam Penyet from Pondok Pantai Timur! That’s more like it πŸ˜€

This famous dish of East Javanese heritage is high on the list of faves for many I’m sure. You may come across a few different variations here and there but the premise is simple – rice is served with some meat, vegetables and some sambal. The meat component is ‘smashed’ (hence the name, penyet = smashed/flattened) with a heavy mallet and the end result is often spectacular.

I’ve had some really good Nasi Ayam Penyet over the years. This includes Empal Penyet (Beef) and Ikan Penyet (Fish). I’ve not even started on things like Bakso Penyet and Sotong Penyet LOL

But if you asked me where to find my favourite Nasi Ayam Penyet, I will tell you to head to Ubi.

Nasi Ayam Penyet ($5.50)

Pondok Pantai Timur is located within an eating house (called Yummy Food House btw). You will see a long queue there especially during lunchtime and for good reason.

They’ve got other dishes on the menu too including Nasi Lemak, Soto, Mee Soto and Mee Rebus too (which I’ve heard are really good by the way) but like me, most people are there for the Nasi Ayam Penyet!

Here is a funny fact for you – I’ve eaten there SO MANY TIMES but it’s ALWAYS bungkus (takeaway)! This review is first time I’m eating there on location LOL mainly because I needed to take photos ah 😝. All other times, we makan in the office and I don’t feel so self-conscious about licking my fingers clean after eating. That’s how good it is!

I don’t know how they do it but their fried chicken is… SEDAP GILER!
It has this excellently crisp exterior that is as tasty as it looks. And the chicken meat itself is super tender to the max. The makcik wields her mighty mini-Mjolnir as the ayam goes through a (literally) smashing good time. The end result – it sits pretty on this palette of perfection ?

Some will prefer their Ayam Penyet to have this thick(er) and crispier with some kremes (crispy crumbs) on the side. Well, while this one may not be as crispy (because, no batter) and not much kremes, it still comes up tops in my books because just the delicious flavour is power.

While the traditional serving of Nasi Ayam Penyet will have plain white rice, the version at Pondok Pantai Timur features rice that is similar to what you get with a serving of chicken rice. This is not uncommon (quite a few other places serve this as well) and it’s this extra flavour that makes it even sedap for me.

And last but definitely not least, the thing that many regard as the most important component – THE SAMBAL!

I’m happy to report that the sambal here is ??? It’s spicy and you’re gonna get strong hints of belachan here and there. Some Nasi Ayam Penyet will have a sambal that’s heavy on the tomatoes (which is actually the traditional way) but here, a fiery flavour prevails!

Now y’all know why I mentioned licking my fingers clean at the end of my meal? πŸ˜›
And I always ask for EXTRA SAMBAL! FUYOH!! In fact, I buy there so often that when the makcik recognizes me, she auto includes extra sambal 😝 so sweet of her!

And in case you were wondering – makan there, takeaway or order for delivery – all also still power πŸ’ͺ🏼.
If you can’t make it down to their stall, you can place bulk orders and delivery via their site!

Actually, I could go on and on about how much I love the Nasi Ayam Penyet at Pondok Pantai Timur. But this is one of those dishes that you have to try for yourselves to know if you like it or not. This is a family-run business and I think that plays a big part is being consistently power all these years.

But I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – this is my FAVOURITEST Nasi Ayam Penyet! ❀
