Are y’all still in the Raya mood? 😛
Okay lah so maybe the days of Lontong are over but I think we’re all back in the mood for the food we are all used to and love for an every day meal am I right?
We recently visited a place that seems to have flown under the radar of so many despite having some really impressive food! Tucked away along Tanjong Katong Road, My Makan Place was certified Halal earlier this year and serves up some really tasty renditions of some classic dishes.
The menu may be modest but to us, that means they’ve concentrated all their efforts into a few dishes and that can only be a good thing. After all – they’re working with a family recipe that’s been perfected over decades!
Okay first things first, let us point out that for a couple of the noodle dishes (namely the Mee Rebus and the Mee Siam), there are 2 versions – the Classic and the Premium.
So what exactly is the difference? Well, the Classic has pretty much what you’d expect from your standard serving like egg and tahu. But with the Premium, you get LOADS of extras like Fish Fillet, crispy Fish Skin, Wanton and a Seafood Ball. Definitely a great choice for those with monster appetites 😛 Plus, at an extra $2 ONLY, this is a real steal!
Our first serving was the Indo Rebus Premium which is, without a doubt, one of the most classic Melayu noodle dishes of all time. And that’s how they serve it at My Makan Place – a classic recipe that really packs punch in the flavour department. The gravy was really tasty and I knew it was ‘all killer no filler’ when the consistency of the gravy remained thick and luscious throughout the entire meal. (as opposed to some places where the gravy turns watery when it gets cold. You know what I’m talking about right?)
After all, this is a recipe that’s been perfected over 20 years!
Next up was the Peranakan Siam Premium – a rendition of Mee Siam by My Makan Place. While we’re more used to a lighter gravy with our Mee Siam, this version’s gravy was much thicker and bolder which results in a very flavourful dish for sure.
And although Mee Siam is generally thought to be a ‘lighter’ dish compared to Mee Rebus, this one is definitely filling thanks to its generous serving and also with all the Premium additions too.
Madura is famous for 3 dishes – Nasi Jagung, Satay and… Soto!
Well, there’s no Nasi Jagung nor Satay in those photos above right? 😛
Rounding off a trio of classic noodle dishes is the Madura Soto. No Premium version here. Just a good ol’ hearty, flavourful, spicy broth that reflects the many ingredients and effort that went into ensuring it packs a punch. Round off with some chicken and a Bergedil (potato cutlet) and you’re all set for some Madura Soto!
Psssssst I don’t have to remind you to add the spicy chili kicap right?
There is a 4th noodle dish on the menu at My Makan Place and while it seems to be the odd one out in this quartet, it is by no means lacking. In fact, I might even say that this was the stand-out noodle dish of the night!
The Premium Beef Short-Ribs Soup was SO SEDAP! The noodles bathe in this glorious hearty beefy broth that’ll have you slurping all the way. Small touches like the boiled white radish and onions on the side go a long way but the real star is the beef.
It’s DOUBLE the goodness with a couple of beef balls (ala Bakso) and some really super tender Beef short-ribs round up this amazing dish. (PS our suggestion – go for the SPICY!)
Oh! And by the way, with certain selections on the menu, you actually get to choose your noodle type 😀
Besides classics like Yellow Noodles and Bee Hoon (as pictured above), go for something a little different like Kway Teow, Ramen and Udon too!
Although we do wish there was an option for Glass Noodles when it came to the Premium Beef Short-Ribs Soup . That would be a power combination PHO sure! 😛
Besides the noodle dishes, you’ve also got a trio of Rice Sets you can dig in to at My Makan Place. First up was the Ayam Penyet set which comes with the usual suspects – white rice, a nice crispy piece of chicken and a really tasty sambal. Completing the dish are a fried egg and some pickled achar.
Okay lah so it’s not the most penyet of Ayam Penyet we’ve had but it’s still a tasty dish. The fried chicken was really crispy and tasty and best enjoyed while hot along with the spicy sambal that comes with.
If you’d like to add a little bit more zing to your Rice Set, go for the Ayam Masak Merah set where it comes with an additional serving of the Ayam Masak Merah ‘sauce’. This is served on the side with the fried chicken by the way and is a little on the tangy side.
But there is something else that trumps all else when it comes to the Rice Sets…
Trust us – you MUST try the Beef Rendang at My Makan Place!
The gravy is delicious and the beef is tender – a testament to the many hours that went into making this dish which is truly one of the stars on the menu.
ALL HAIL THE BEEF RENDANG! 😛
In case you have not noticed, let us point out to you that the prices of the dishes at My Makan Place are more than reasonable! I mean, great food is power but even more so when the price is so worth it right? Good food at a great price – definitely a thumbs-up for that!
So the next time you’re in the area, make plans to head down to My Makan Place. Gather up the gang and not only tuck into some really good and authentic food but also chillax for awhile in a really cozy ambiance with family and friends. This one is definitely filed under our ‘Hidden Gems’ section.
