Our first makan post in our Hong Kong series was the visit(s) to Ma’s Restaurant but believe it or not – the first meal I had on the trip was at Our Restaurant!
Yes yes yes I know I know… I obviously wanted to makan local Hong Kong cuisine was far as possible (which was the aim of the whole trip in the first place right!) but upon arrival at Hotel 108 along Soy Street, I found myself quite a ways away from the nearest ‘local’ makan place on my list!
So, I hit up my good friend, Google Maps, and found a makan place not 200m from where I was staying. So, a short stroll later, I finally managed to find the place.
Our Restaurant is nestled within the small lanes along Tung Choi Street. This is also where you’ll find the famous Ladies’ Market shopping street which means even if you take some time to find it, you can do some shopping along the way 😛
Anyways, it’s a Turkish / Middle-Eastern cuisine place which means you’ll find pretty much all your favourites on their (very extensive) menu. From Kebabs to Falafels to Kofte to Pides and to… my personal fave – Hummus!
Hummus needs no introduction lah right? Well, on the off-chance that some of you may not have tried or even heard of Hummus before, it’s actually made of ground chickpeas and Tahini (sesame seed paste). This is topped off with olive oil and sometimes a little bit of spice. You may even see extravagant servings of Hummus with meats such as beef or lamb sometimes! SEDAP!!
The standard serving of Hummus at Our Restaurant comes with some Pita bread (as it should) and you can always order more if you’d like.
To be honest with you, I always have a problem choosing between Hummus and Baba Ganoush (eggplant) when I have Middle-Eastern food. But this time, the Hummus comes out tops!
I kinda knew that I was gonna have Doner Kebab as soon as I had decided on dining at Our Restaurant. The only question was – what would I have it with?
I could have gone with the Roll or maybe the Pita? But I was really hungry and so I wanted to fill up right and proper (especially with the chilly weather outside) so I decided on the Rice.
They have Lamb and Chicken on the menu so I went for my usual Mix of both. The meat was very flavourful and had just the right amount of juiciness and a little char on the sides for added flavour. There’s also a side salad that comes with and adds a bit of zing thanks to the vinegar-ish dressing. Great combination!
I’m the meat guy so I really enjoyed digging into this especially since the meat was really flavourful and well-spiced. I should have taken the option of adding more meat for about HK$60! Hmmmm… oh well.
All in all, I’d day this was a great meal (probably also because I was super hungry) even though it wasn’t the one I had planned on as my first meal in Hong Kong. But worth the visit especially if you’re in the area (I even went back at night and got a Chicken Kebab Roll for supper!).
Just brace yourselves for the super loud music 😛
