JENG JENG JENG after all the hype that has been surrounding Flavour Flings in recent months, The Halal Food Blog finally arrives! LOL ‘lambat setapak’ as we always say but better late than never because we have been hearing great things about the dishes we were going to try this time.
Today’s word of the say is – Salted Egg Yolk.
Okay that’s actually 3 words but you get the picture right LOL
Surely you must all know about our love for Salted Egg Yolk right? #SaltedEggYolkAnything
So far we’ve had quite a few dishes in our time with this most favouritest ingredient but today, we were going to try something with Salted Edd Yolk for the first time. This was a dish that had been making waves since its arrival on our shores from Hong Kong. And something you didn’t know – Flavour Flings was actually the very first one to introduce it here and on top of that’s it’s certified Halal so that is a double bonus for us.
Well, we’re pretty sure a lot of you have seen it or at least heard about it.
Yes – we are talking about the famous Salted Egg Yolk Croissant.
So what’s so special this unassuming dish anyways?
Well, imagine a nice, buttery, flaky pastry with a golden, flowy treasure within LOL just wait and see okay.
When news about the Salted Egg Yolk Croissant at Flavour Flings broke, it was pretty much pandemonium from what we heard. The crowds starting flocking to this cafe in Hougang to get a taste of this, by then notoriously sedap, famous delicacy.
In fact, it became so popular and the crowd was so overwhelming that they had to allocate different waves of batches so that people could plan ahead and try to minimize the risk of disappointment. Because these things were selling out and fast! LOL
Woooooooooooooooo talk about a literal lava eruption! LOL
No wonder Flavour Flings came up with the hashtag #oozelala for this dish
Yeah it all looks very nice but how’s the taste?
The croissant itself was nice and flaky with a nice crisp as you bite/cut into it.
And I’m not sure if you can tell from the photos but it’s actually quite big croissant. Definitely bigger than your average croissant for sure.
The Salted Egg Yolk ‘lava’ has a great salted egg yolk flavour that is expected. Since this is a dessert after all, this is more of a salted egg yolk custard which means it does have a bit of a sweet edge to it which makes this a very creamy and rich runny custard.
We don’t have any others to compare to so far but this one definitely lives up to the hype it has been getting!
The Salted Egg Yolk madness continues with the Salted Egg Yolk Fries.
Actually, I think that they should rename this dish to ‘Double Trouble Fries’ LOL
Why?
This time, you get the actual Salted Egg Yolk Sauce (the savoury type not the custard) which the fries are absolutely swimming in which is sure to please any lover of salted egg yolk anything.
But besides the copious amount of Salted Egg Yolk Sauce, they also add buttered cereal as a topping.
Yes, buttered cereal as in the same type you get when you order Cereal Prawns or Cereal Squid at seafood restaurants LOL see what I mean about ‘double trouble’? 😛
This is a very big serving of fries. It’s definitely best if shared with friends (and I’m talking like maybe even 3-4 friends) especially since you’re probably going to having dishes on the menu too.
Overall, I think this was a great version of Salted Egg Yolk Fries but the buttered cereal definitely pushes it to the maximum level because not only do you have the rich and very strong-flavoured salted egg yolk sauce, you also have the buttered cereal which also has a bit of a salty edge to it.
I guess a lot of people will hit the ‘cepat muak’ button on this one pretty quickly.
We’ve enjoyed quite a few versions of Eggs Benedict at Flavour Flings in our past visits including the Eggs Royale, the Royale 2.0 and the original Eggs Benedict of course and here’s the latest version – the Dirty Benny.
And what makes it ‘dirty’? Our favourite Salted Egg Yolk Sauce! Yeah!
The other versions were fantastic and this one is not different especially if you’re a fan of Eggs Benedict and/or any runny yolk dishes. Just imagine that soft runny yolk gloriously flowing LOL
We have that great toasted Brioche with Turkey Ham and a perfectly poached egg as a crowning glory. Finish everything off with Salted Yolk Sauce and some of that buttered cereal. And in case you’re extra hungry, a pair of chicken sausages await you on the side with some greens for good measure.
Like we said, this is a great dish and definitely something to savour. Serving is definitely very generous and it has a very strong and rich flavour thanks to the salted egg yolk sauce and the buttered cereal. Things get extra rich once all that runny egg yolk from the poached eggs is introduced into the mix.
Since there are so many dishes with very strong and distinct flavours on the menu at Flavour Flings, maybe the best thing to do is order a few different dishes and everyone shares. Not just because the serving sizes are very generous but also so everyone gets to try everything and discover all the contrasting flavours.
It’s been pretty much all Salted Egg Yolk madness in this post but let’s not forget the other great items on the Flavour Flings menu including other new dishes that don’t have any salted egg yolk in them LOL
Too much salted egg yolk can overkill even an extreme salted egg yolk lover like myself but I know where to go to get my salted egg yolk fix. Especially that glorious Salted Egg Yolk Croissant!!
