I want to rave to y’all about Gandhi Restaurant! I actually love a good, hearty Banana Leaf meal and it can be quite a challenge to find one. That’s why I was SO HAPPY to find the Halal-certified Gandhi Restaurant where they are serving up some really tasty and authentic cuisine ππΌ.
Located in the heart of the Serangoon area, Gandhi Restaurant has been serving up authentic and delicious South Indian cuisine in the traditional way. They’ve been around in the 70s and today, they’re popular with everyone from all walks of life. Traditional and excellent quality food has made them the top choice for many. And one of the best things is – they are HALAL-CERTIFIED π.
So now, not only do I have a perfect spot to enjoy some Banana Leaf meals but it’s also just in time for Ramadan! Can definitely see myself enjoying some of these delicious dishes for Iftar.
The basics are always the same – and simple is best! Atop a banana leaf sits a generous serving of rice along with some veggies and sambal to accompany your meal. And one of my personal favourite accompaniments is the Rasam! Really gets the appetite going with its peppery and tangy flavours π€€. By the way, when you order the Set Meal, you get FREE FLOW of rice πͺπΌ. They’ve also gotΒ Briyani Rice if you’re not in the mood for white rice by the way!
They have curries which will be served to you with your meal. But the real fun comes when you’re selecting your dishes! There’s a plethora of dishes for you to choose from at Gandhi Restaurant! And they pride themselves on cooking these dishes the traditional South Indian way which explain why they’re a big hit with the masses! Authentic and tasty flavours is a must. Whether you prefer chicken, mutton, seafood or even vegetarian dishes, they’ve got plenty to choose from!
As always, I’m gonna run down what I enjoyed for my Banana Leaf feast at Gandhi Restaurant!
Some of the more popular selections include familiar flavours like their signature Masala. You can enjoy that delicious Masala flavour with Mutton and/or Chicken and it’s a definite hit. You get to enjoy that great bold flavour with that nice kick of spice and it’s SHIOK! Or if you’re a fan of Tripe, you can try the Kodal (Tripe) Curry too!
You love seafood? No problem! The seafood is fresh and the curries/sambal are delicious π. I tried the Big Prawn Sambal but they’ve also got Sambal Crab, Fish Roe, Sotong, Sardine and even Ikan Bilis Sambal/Curry! π₯
Something that I actually really enjoyed was a dish I was trying for the first time. You MUST TRY the Onion Chicken when you visit Gandhi Restaurant it’s soooo good!
A few other dishes I couldn’t resist trying like the classic Fried Fish and Chili Chicken. They may seem simple but sometimes simple ones are the power ones! Just a good healthy seasoning of spices and fried to perfection. And speaking of classic, I deifnitely can never say no to some Quail Eggs π. Especially with that Sambal – give me more!
If you wanna try something more unique, try the Fish Puttu! Have y’all ever tried it before? Another simple dish that goes perfectly with the other dishes you’re enjoying with your Banana Leaf meal. And I have to be honest, I didn’t know what that giant ball things was when I chose it.. Turns out it is a BIG Potato Cutlet! Just perfect because just like how I like Bagedil with my Nasi Padang, I definitely love some Potato Cutlet with my Banana Leaf meal.
Another perfect example of how they have something for everyone at Gandhi Restaurant. The dishes I showcased here are just the tip of the iceberg ok! They’ve got plenty more I haven’t even mentioned! They even have a special Tiffin menu that’s available from 5pm onwards and includes treats like Thosai, Uttapam, Idli, Prata and more!
You’re spoiled for choice when it comes to the menu at Gandhi Restaurant. But like I said, there’s something for everyone π. From the mild to the spicy π₯ they’ve got you covered. Bottom line – you’re in for a hearty and delicious feast for sure! (And don’t forget to finish off with some sweet dessert π)

Something I noticed when I was dining at Gandhi Restaurant was the diversity of the crowd there. It was not just your typical lunchtime crowd and not just tourists missing a taste of home. I saw both locals and tourists. There were families and solo diners. I saw workers and I even saw students. And I definitely saw people from all different races coming to Gandhi Restaurant to enjoy a hearty meal.
I’m definitely adding this to my list of makan places to visit especially when I’m craving their authentic South Indian flavours. With Ramadan around the corner, I definitely see myself visiting with family and friends for Iftar there or maybe can bungkus and enjoy at home/work also! Plus they also offer ISLANDWIDE DELIVERY – super convenient!
See y’all at Gandhi Restaurant for some Banana Leaf meals and more ok! ππΌ
