(working title) – The Grunge Brunch

Big bang baby, it’s a grunge brunch brunch.
(Did anyone else get that reference or am I the only Stone Temple Pilots fan around?)

We all know and love (working title) for so many different reasons. Whether you’ve been visiting them since their early days as a hostel/burger bar to their recent spin as the lepak spot of choice (still with burgers of course), it’s easy to find a reason to wanna visit (working title).

Well, they’ve just added another reason – The Grunge Brunch.
When you think of brunch, you’re probably thinking of pancakes and waffles and the likes. Hey, this is The Grunge Brunch so they go hard or go home LOL :P. We tried ALL the dishes available on this new menu and trust us – you don’t wanna miss this.

The Big Breakfast ($23.80)

Feeling hungry? Look no further than the filler-upper known as The Big Breakfast. And when we say “big”, we mean “BIG”! A serving of eggs the way you like em (we went with Scrammy), Lamb Koftas, Grilled Portobello Mushroom, Roasted Tomatoes, Braised Beans (more on this later!), Tater Tots, Arugula plus some toasted Sourdough for good measure.

A classic (yet not so classic) breakfast platter fit for a king and queen. It seems like a lot and to be honest, it is! Even the mightiest of appetites might need some help with this one though so don’t be afraid to share ok! I’ve been told the alternative name for this dish is “Big sia!” (no joke) but I’d just call it Big Bang Baby.

Anyways, I’d like to tell you that the other menu items are on the lighter side but.. not really 😛

Benny Benassi ($21.30)

Okay I normally save the best for the last but I just couldn’t put it off any longer – the Benny Bennasi was my #1 top dish on The Grunge Brunch menu. There I said it!

This is the Grunge Brunch spin on the classic Eggs Benedict – perfectly poached eggs sit atop toasted Sourdough and.. Coffee Braised Beef Cheeks ZOMG! Super tender and super tasty for sure. Don’t be fooled by the ‘coffee’ in the description because it doesn’t taste like coffee. You may get hints of it but it mainly tenderizes and boosts the beefy flavour more than anything else.

The Hollandaise sauce was pleasantly not too overwhelming so you get to enjoy all the flavours on the dish as they meld together. Take a big chomp of everything together for that perfect bite. Give me the Benny Benassi anytime!

Avocado Bravado ($16.20)

FUN FACT: Did you know that ‘Avocado Bravado‘ was also the name of a Smoothie at the original (working title)?

Well, I guess it would be fair to say that this is probably the ‘lightest’ brunch menu item. Spiced Guacamole atop toasted Sourdough and crowned with some pickled red onions, some greens & grains, Dukkah (a nuts and spices mix) and Pomegranate.

Fans of Avocado Toast will enjoy this (working title) twist. Good combination of contrasting flavours. I found it interesting that they went the smashed route instead of the sliced route. But those pickled red onions were awesome and made a world of difference to the flavour!

Triple C Bagel ($18.70)

There’s no need to crack your heads – the Triple C stands for ‘Corn Crusted Chicken’ which is really the highlight of this sandwich. A Corn Crusted Chicken fillet in between a toasted Bagel and paired with Chipotle Slaw, Arugula, Pickled Apple & Carrot and Watermelon Radish Petals.

That’s right – those flower petal things are actually watermelon-infused dehydrated radish slices. GENIUS!! So addictive that if they sold them separately on the side, I’d order a serving or 3.

Anyways, that chicken fillet is really nice and crusty which means a great crisp bite. And don’t underestimate the Chipotle Slaw because it has a kick!

Not Your Regular Beans On Toast ($19.60)

Last but definitely not least is another platter which, while it does not seem as bountiful as The Big Breakfast, is every bit as filling. After all, these are Not Your Regular Beans On Toast.

You’ve got your creamy Scrambled Eggs, Braised Spicy Pinto Beans, a home-ground Beef patty plus a toasty Brioche bun and some Nachos for added crunch. Now I wanna tell you about those Braised Spicy Pinto Beans (which you also get with The Big Breakfast). I think it’s REALLY great that they’re giving you more than just Baked Beans out of the can (which is pretty common in a lot of places). You’re really gonna appreciate the flavour when you taste these beans. PLUS they’ve actually got a strong spicy kick!

Also, I originally thought I’d prefer a toasty Sourdough here but now that I think about it, that buttery Brioche was actually very welcome. Great to mop up those beans and eggs 😀

Red Velvet

What would be brunch without some a lot of coffee am I right? And they’ve got plenty at (working title). Actually, besides their burgers, artisanal coffee is something they’re really big on here and it’s obvious.

Check out their very own ‘The Blackout’ Espresso blend for good coffee kick. Classics are all on the menu of course plus some interesting creations like the Bandung Latte, Dirty Bandung, Red Velvet and the Babycino among others. You can tell they take their coffee seriously when you speak to them at (working title).

Daniel Foo – remember the name.

The Grunge Brunch is only available between 10am-3pm on Saturdays and Sundays. Could this possibly be the new port for brunch with the kakis on the weekend? Just like their other brands, The Black Hole Group really knows how to pick ’em that’s for sure.

It Smells Like Teen Spirit as soon as you walk in to get out of the Black Hole Sun, probably because you’re on a Big Empty stomach. The food makes you feel Alive and excited before you relax into an Even Flow. Just Come As You Are at (working title).

PS no, they don’t have Pennyroyal Tea on the menu.
(Here I am spewing out all these Grunge songs from my (sonic) youth. Please tell me some of you know them as well and I am not the only old bird here LOL)
