Tipo Pasta Bar – They Pasta Test With Flying Colours!

Royal Ragu ($13.90)

I don’t know if anyone else caught that joke… It’s supposed to be read as “They passed the tes…”.
Oh never mind *crickets*

The Black Hole Group is at it again folks! They’ve been busy adding to their growing list of trendy makan places and showing no signs of slowing down yet. The amazeballs part is how diverse the different brands are – each with their own unique identity and specialty.

Case-in-point is one of their latest joints – Tipo.
And in case you haven’t caught the drift yet, they specializes in pasta!

Located in a cozy spot along North Bridge Road, you might miss this unassuming eatery. But I’m pretty sure when you see their freshly-made pasta hanging at the window, it’s going to catch your eye for sure. After all, how many Halal makan places do you know that make their own pasta fresh? Once you step through the doors, it’s a cozy ambiance that’ll get you in the mood for some good food.

Garlic & Parsley Pappardelle

Paprika Casarecce
Lemon Mafalda
Beetroot and Garlic Angelhair Pasta

So Tipo makes their own pasta fresh and on-site. You might even see them literally making it behind the counter when you drop by. No kidding! They use premium top-grade ingredients (their name actually comes from a type of wheat flour used to make the pasta!) It takes awhile to dry after it’s made but all pastas you see at Tipo are made by them and them alone. No store-bought pasta to be found.

Besides the fact that they make it fresh, it’s actually really amazing that they’re able to make so many types of pasta and we’re not talking about your average run-of-the-mill Spaghetti here. (Not that there’s anything wrong with Spaghetti of course).

I’d never even heard of Casarecce or Mafalda let alone eaten them before my visit to Tipo. And that was a really nice surprise because it’s different from just choosing Penne or Fusilli or Linguine as you probably would at most other restaurants or cafes when you order pasta. Plus, they even manage to infuse interesting hints of flavours like lemon and all sorts of herbs. And the choices of pasta cycle every few days so you’re always in for a bit of a surprise.

Okay of me gushing about them making pasta. On to the actual food!

Royal Ragu ($13.90)

There are 2 parts to the pasta menu at Tipo. You get to build your own pasta (more on that later) but if you’re not feeling so adventurous, they have some dishes all ready for you to choose from.

FUN FACT (aka Adam is damn fussy): When I have a tomato-based pasta, I don’t like it to be drowning in sauce. So that’s why I chose a Ragu which is perfect for me. Enough flavourful sauce to coat the pasta (I chose the Lemon Mafalda by the way) and I’m licking my lips all the way.

The Royal Ragu also features tender beef that’s been shredded into the sauce, some Ricotta cheese to cut through the tangy tomato sauce and a generous ring of Arugula. Because, you can’t go wrong with Rocket. I also added a Sous Vide Egg for good measure.

All in all, a very hearty serving of great food. Tasted great and definitely extra points for the ‘comfort food’ angle because it was pouring outside as we tucked in ๐Ÿ˜€

Prawn Aglio ($12.90)

Another one off the set menu is the Prawn Aglio – a classic mix of pasta, olive oil, a little chili and all of that is combined with prawns, a Sous Vide Egg and a healthy serving of Parmesan.

If you’re not in the mood for tomato-based or creamy, then Aglio Olio is the way to go for sure!

But of course, at Tipo you also have the option of creating your own dish from scratch. That means that the sky is the limit when you Build Your Own Pasta.

You choose your type of pasta, your sauce (choose from 5 including Aglio Olio, Alfredo, Pomodoro, Roasted Red Pepper and Beef Ragu) and then top it off with a whole host of stuff to choose from. Choose from at least 20 different components! Some really unique ones to be found!

Some are complimentary like chili flakes, extra virgin olive oil and Parmesan and they have ingredients ranging in price from $1 to $3. There are some pretty interesting things to choose especially from the $3 Premium list. Would you care for some Black Caviar? Vinegared Mussels? I’ve got my eyes set on the Salt Cured Egg Yolks the next time I visit! Confirmed best with a creamy pasta!

Tiramisu & Espresso Panna Cotta
Pistachio & Yuzu Feuilletine Cake ($8.00)

I wouldn’t end this post without reminding y’all that you MUST have some dessert after your pasta feast a Tipo ๐Ÿ˜› It’s a pretty limited selection but there’s some really good stuff on there.

Tiramisu is always a classic and I’ve been told that the Espresso Panna Cotta is excellent. I had the Pistachio & Yuzu Feuilletine Cake which is several layers of yum! A good balance of flavours but be sure to let it rest for awhile after serving because the extra cold fridge means it might be a bit… solid.

They’ve only just officially opened but take it from us – they know their pasta. As they grow, I look forward to more innovative dishes being introduced as well! I anticipate this post being updated often with more dishes we try when we visit. So let me give you a PRO TIP(o) – head down to Tipo. You won’t regret it.
