The Mad Sailors – Sunday Roast, Fish & Chips and British Grub Galore

Ello Guv’nor! Where have y’all been?? (and by y’all i mean we’all) πŸ˜› Only God knows what’s taken us so long to visit The Mad Sailors. I mean, we’ve visited pretty much every other spot from The Black Hole Group PLUS this place serves up plenty that’s right down my alley. So we finally got our plates of meat moving all the way to Haji Lane so let’s make this count!

So The Mad Sailors specializes in churning out some jolly good British grub. We’re talking about some classics like Bangers & Mash, Fish & Chippies and a few surprising twists here and there.

Sunday Roast ($26.90)

I know a lot of you are all about the Fish & Chips but a Sunday Roast is actually about as British as it gets when it comes to a classic. It’s got everything you need on one plate!

A healthy cut of Roast Beef comes with all the trimmings including Mushy Peas, carrots, mushrooms and potatoes. Round everything up with the iconic must-have Yorkshire Pudding – which is actually not a sweet pudding as some may expect but more like a… hmm.. I’m gonna call it the equivalent to a bun/pastry hybrid πŸ˜›

The meat was tender and tasty (it’s a Roast Beef and not a steak so don’t ask me about doneness okay) especially with that savoury Worcestershire-ish brown sauce. There’s plenty to enjoy with both the meat and the Yorkshire Pudding.

Everything goes great together and you can probably wipe this whole thing out alone if you’re really hungry. But, don’t be shy to share lah okay then can order more stuff on the side LOL

Masala Fish & Chips ($17.90)

Okay so I can’t put it off anymore – here’s what you’ve all been waiting for. The Fish & Chips!
Besides the classic Fish & Chips, they’ve actually got a few different versions to choose from on the menu at The Mad Sailors (5 actually and that’s just the fried variety!)

Check out their Masala Fish & Chips which marries both East & West (like The Kumars at No. 42).

You get some battered Dory that’s actually got a Masala Spice batter and then been given the #DeepFriedGoodness treatment. Throw in some hand-cut potato chips (this is the legit fresh one not the frozen-from-a-bag type) too. But that’s where things start to get a little different.

Instead of a salad, you get some pickled vegetable aka Achar n the side. But the real kicker here is the Masala Mint Chutney that’s (very artistically) swished onto and served on your plate. Bold flavours abound that actually really go well with the fish! A good choice if you’re looking for a different vision to your classic Fish & Chips πŸ˜€

And speaking of different…

Sambal Fish & Chips ($17.90)

If you like SPICY then you MUST order the Sambal Fish & Chips! ?

Battered and deep-fried Dory ?
Classic hand-cut chips ?
SPICY SAMBAL ???

You know how some sambals look ‘fierce’ but are not that spicy right… Well this one is LEGIT! No mucking about at The Mad Sailors apparently because they mean business with their sambal! They even give some Achar and yoghurt-y sauce on the side to help cool you down lah LOL If you’re hantu chili then this one will be good for you!

Dory Fish & Chips ($16.90)

Of course, if you still want some of the good ol’ fashioned style, they have that too!

A classic serving of batter-fried Dory fillets with chips, salad and creamy Tartar sauce! For me, I’d personally spring a little extra for the Cod Fish & Chips ($18.90). Sweeter and firmer flesh with the Cod if y’know what I’m saying πŸ˜€

Cheeky Git ($21.90)

I kid you not – the Cheeky Git is officially my most favouritest dish on the menu at The Mad Sailors!

A super tender cheek of beef that’s been braised for who knows how long but it’s just amazeballs. Served with some veggies on the side and a bed of mash (which could have been a bit smoother now that I think about it) but the star is obviously that beef!

PS at $21.90 – that’s a steal, kiddies! Worth every penny and more.

Laksa Pesto Pasta ($18.90)

I saw PLENTY of people posting about this dish on their IG recently. Seems like the Laksa Pesto Pasta is a big hit!

The Laksa flavour is bold and packs a punch here. You can thank the Pesto that’s had Laksa paste and spices infused into it hence the sedap result. Throw in some prawns and clams along with your Linguine and you’re all set! If you love your pasta but always gotta have that Asian flavour, get this.

Carbonara Duck ($18.90)

Oh, my egg runneth over…

But seriously – this was (surprisingly) my favourite dish of the night. When you hear Duck Pasta, you will probably think of (smoked) duck atop some tomato-based pasta am I right or am I right? So when it said, ‘Carbonara’ on the menu, I was intrigued!

When the dish arrived, I was like “Where the duck is the duck?“. And then I found out after a few bites ? There was no smoked duck here… It was actual duck meat that had been cooked, finely shredded and then mixed-in to the pasta and sauce! AND IT WAS SEDAP GILER! There was no gamey flavour at all (in case you’re worried about that) and you do get to enjoy a slight textural difference with each chew thanks to the duck.

If you love Carbonara, then this is a must try. If you love duck, then this is a MUST TRY!

Hunky Dory Aglio Olio ($18.90)

And last but not least for our Pasta course, we tried the Hunky Dory Aglio Olio. (To avoid confusion, I say first ah – there’s NO Dory in this dish LOL) πŸ˜›

A classic Aglio Olio has pasta, garlic olive oil and a little chili for sure. All checked and present here! As a bonus, they throw in some prawns and mushrooms for good measure too. Top that all off with a copious amount of Parmesan cheese that’s been shaved directly from heaven onto your plate LOL

The only pasta dish we didn’t try (because so much food already!) was the Queen Vic Pink which is a tomato-base pasta with Garlic & Herb Sausages. But you can enjoy those sausages in another dish –

Bangers & Mash ($17.90)

It’s a real sausage fest here (oi!) at The Mad Sailors and a true British classic is the Bangers & Mash!

I have to say that the Garlic & Herb Sausages were DELICIOUS! It’s beef sausages by the way so you’re guaranteed a full-flavoured kick here along with that savoury brown onion gravy. Mushy Peas and Slaw on the side as you enjoy everything with a well-pureed bed of Mashed Potatoes. Actually quite shiok ah! I’m actually craving for it as I type this out πŸ˜›

Goodness Gracious Me ($17.90)

Oh blimey! What a burger this is being! (Did anyone else get that reference?)

The Goodness Gracious Me boasts a fried chicken thigh with a house-made yoghurt sauce, onions, tomatoes and a Tikka Masala sauce all in between a pair of Brioche buns. If you’re looking for a burger to fill you up, this is most definitely being it! Por favor?

On the menu at The Mad Sailors, there are actually plenty of other dishes I really wanna try. The Classic Chip Butty (HP sauce FTW) and the Spiced Scotch Egg are top of the list. Even their Snacks menu is extensive doing little to stop me from drooling.

Creamy White Mussels ($13.90)

Crikey Crab ($8.90)

I thought I’d start the Snack section with some seafood!

Pretty sure that Creamy White Mussels are big on a lot of peoples’ list for starters. Fresh Blue Mussels are cooked in a cream sauce and there’s some bread on the side for mopping up that sauce. Sharp-tongued diners will detect a slight tart-ness in the sauce courtesy of some vinegar!

If you’re looking for a lighter munch, the Crikey Crab should be right up your alley. Mini Crabs deep fried and served with a house-made Tartar sauce? Sign me up sideways! (Geddit? Sideways. Cos it’s crab. Pfft oh never mind.)

Mad Poutine ($10.90)

The Mad Poutine, as you can probably tell by the name, has A LOT going on! πŸ˜› In fact, it’s listed in the Snacks section but could very well deserve a place on the Mains side of the menu!

Chips are completely doused in a special sambal gravy and mint chutney plus some fried onions and garlic for good measure. Definitely a very Anglo-Indian influence here and if I had to describe it in one word, it’s be – BOLD!

Anyways, I’ve saved the best for last! πŸ˜€

Marmite Honey Wings ($9.90)

O glorious Marmite! ❀❀❀
Okay lah I know that this is an acquired taste and not many of you are fans (yet). In fact, lots of you have told me you have not even tried this amazing thing called Marmite πŸ˜›

Well, this might actually be a good place for you to start! They go easy on the Marmite here (so you don’t get scared off LOL). Plus you get hints of honey and smokey flavours thanks to the grill. A good snack no less. But if there’s Marmite in it, you can be sure we’re gonna order it πŸ˜€

British Bubblegum ($8.00)
Wonky Chocolate ($8.00)
Butterbeer, Berry Bena and Victorian Lemonade ($8.00)

Wash it all down with some refreshing beverages. Butterbeer is always a good choice! Sodas, Smooshies, Coffee – you name it, they’ve got it. Oh! Perhaps a nice cuppa tea for ya, luv? πŸ˜›

REGRET – not ordering the Fried Mars Bar (or any of the desserts lah!) LOL oh well next time lah like that! And in case you’re worried about the kids, don’t! They’ve got kids’ meals on the menu too okay!

The Mad Sailors is definitely a place to visit with the gang for great grub and great company. Plus, it’s in the middle of Haji Lane so that’s a big plus already. Just remember to say hello to the friendly Marmite Lady okay! (Spot her in the photo below!)

PS I’d like to dedicate this post to the lovely people of Folkestone ??
