Hello everyone! 안녕하세요! We’re proud to present our special series on Halal makan places we visited during our recent trip to Seoul! This round – The Halal Guys Korea 더 할랄가이즈 코리아!
We were extremely honoured to be invited by the Korea Tourism Organization (Malaysia) to visit South Korea again (we went to Busan and Jeju the last time) and also be a part of the launch of Halal Restaurant Week Korea 2019! More information about that at the end of the post so let’s start on the makan no – 나 배고파!!
(BTW – head down to our Instagram profile page and watch all the IG Stories from the trip!)
The Halal Guys is legendary. They’ve gained quite a following since their humble beginnings in the 90s out of a food truck. Today, they are available at locations worldwide including the USA, UK, Indonesia and South Korea!
To be honest, I’d be dying to try The Halal Guys and their famous Gyros for a long time. I thought that my first (and closest) chance would probably be at their outlet in Jakarta. But little did I know, my chance would come at, of all places, Seoul!
Well, there was no better time than now 😀
So what exactly is a Gyro? Well, it’s kinda like the Greek version of a Kebab. It’s basically beef lah LOL 😛 At The Halal Guys Korea, they’re serving up in a couple of ways. You can enjoy your meat (either beef gyro/chicken) in one of their Platters or a Gyro Sandwich (aka Wrap).
Whatever you choose, it’s a MUST to have their famous (secret) ingredient – the WHITE SAUCE! It’s kinda hard to pinpoint what the actual flavour of this sauce can be categorized as.. but I’m gonna say it’s kinda like a creamy garlic sauce. Bottom line – it’s SEDAP GILER and goes perfectly with the Gyros!
The Platter comes with lettuce and tomatoes plus some rice too. Top that all off with a generous serving of meat – choose Beef Gyro or Chicken or a Mix of both – plus some Pita bread too. If you’re feeling extra hungry, you can add a Falafel or two on the side 😛
Sandwiches (pretty much Wraps lah) are also a good choice. Plenty of meaty goodness in a Pita wrap and you’re all set from some good eatin’ lah! The legend of The Halal Guys!
But whatever the case, the White Sauce is a MUST HAVE (I think I have been repeating this) and if you like a touch of spicy, get some of the Red Sauce too. Don’t underestimate that Red Sauce okay.. it’s actually got quite a kick to it! I mean, it’s quite hot lah and definitely adds to the flavour of the dish.
There’s something special on the menu that is available ONLY at their Seoul branches. They literally call it ‘Secret Fries’ (I’m not kidding!) and it’s the bomb!
You won’t find it on the menu but you might have the staff ask you if you’d like to try a serving. The correct answer to that would be “YES PLEASE!” 😛 It’s a heap of fries with some Beef Gyro (or Chicken) piled on top and finished off with White Sauce, Red Sauce and BBQ Sauce!
And don’t forget – this is a Seoul special so don’t miss out!
Like I said, I didn’t think my first The Halal Guys experience would be in Seoul… but I’m glad it was and I can’t wait til the next time 😀
A Quick Word About Halal Food In South Korea
So in case you’re wondering, it’s (thankfully) getting easier to find Halal food in South Korea these days. Across the country, Halal food and Muslim-friendly options are becoming more readily available. This is in part thanks to the efforts from organizations and events like Korea Tourism Organization and Halal Restaurant Week Korea!
You may see some of these labels when you visit restaurants that are suitable for Muslims to visit. They have 4 main categories that determine the ‘Halal-ness’ of an eatery. This is to be expected lah I guess especially where the Halal food scene is still developing and depending on which part of South Korea you’re visiting.
The 4 categories are;
- Halal-certified (safest as the eatery is certified Halal by the Korea Muslim Federation)
- Self-certified (basically means eatery is Muslim-owned)
- Muslim-Friendly (serves Halal food but may serve alcoholic beverages) *most common*
- Pork Free (eatery does not have Pork but may serve non-Halal meat and/or alcoholic beverages)
It may seem complicated with 4 categories but as always, we can simplify it. Do your due diligence and do not be afraid to #AskTheQuestion especially since you’re travelling. Halal is an individual responsibility so get the info and make an informed decision. Look for these labels at the door. If there is any doubt at all, best to give it a miss
Our advice is to check out the Halal Restaurant Week Korea website where you can not only find a listing of Halal/Muslim-friendly eating options in South Korea but also enjoy some perks and discounts too! This year’s Halal Restaurant Week Korea 2019 is being held from 1st September til 31st October (longer than a week lah :P).
Check out this handy micro-site – www.hrwkorea.or.kr/coupons/coupons.php – for more details on how to get your coupons okay! Thank you Korea Tourism Organization for taking the initiative to spread more information about Halal / Muslim-travel in South Korea! ??
