Well, it seems like this hidden gem has been in the news lately. Very happy to see the shop doing well! but good luck to regulars who used to enjoy it being a bit more ‘hidden’ 😛. That’s right – I’m talking about Fiie’s Cafe (formerly known as As-Shifaa Cafe) but you’ll probably know it better by – Mister Grumpy Fried Chicken now.
The name may have changed but the food remains tasty and affordable. Many regulars who work in the area will know about this secret eating spot that serves up a more-than-awesome serving of Nasi Ayam.
I got to know about this place thanks to my darling wife (so means I got doubly lucky lah right 😁) who used to work nearby Lucky Plaza. And our original review was way back in 2014. I believe it was literally my first visit there when I met her during her lunch break.
@thehalalfoodblog Mister Grumpy Fried Chicken Nasi Ayam always hits the spot 🔥 Theyre opening their 3rd outlet next week (clue: it’s not in the East side 🥲) #halalsg #sgfoodie #fyp
So this isn’t your Hainanese-style chicken rice as you can see. They sell Nasi Ayam where your chicken rice is served with a sedap giler chicken that’s given the #DeepFriedGoodness treatment!
Deep-fried chicken served with extra crispy crumbs for that extra shiokness takes it to the next level! I guess you could say this is a Malay-style of chicken rice. Y’all probably know, there are 2-3 really awesome ones around the island and this one definitely makes the list. There’s something about that traditional marination of flavours that gives that taste we all love.
The fried chicken is not the only ‘unique’ thing about this Nasi Ayam by the way…
On top of the usual Chicken Rice chili, you also get to enjoy their signature Sambal 🔥 And trust me – this one is super shiok! It’s kinda like a Sambal Ikan Bilis that you might get with Nasi Lemak but somehow this one is a little different. Whatever the case, all the flavours just go so well together and to be honest my mouth is just watering as I type this out.
When we used to visit, they had extra treats like Fried Chicken Parts like Gizzard and Neck etc (aka Empedal) which everyone just loved and I now see more sides on the their menu including Sambal Quail Eggs, Sambal Hotdogs and Bagedil. Whatever you choice, the main star is undoubtedly the Fried Chicken Nasi Ayam 💪🏼
Needless to say, we highly recommend the Nasi Ayam here. I’m going to have to get used to calling it Mister Grumpy Fried Chicken aka Fiie’s Cafe and not As-Shifaa but most important thing is that the food is still sedap. This is a good example where the the place lives up to the hype you see online. See y’all there! (Hopefully when the lunch crowd has passed LOL).
PS you can probably see that I haven’t really mentioned much about the angle taken by most media outlets – about the ‘grumpy’ nature of the stall owner(s) (hence the name Mister Grumpy Fried Chicken). All I can say is that I’ve never had an unpleasant experience when we visited and like most people will say – the food is definitely worth the wait.
The good news is that Mister Grumpy Fried Chicken by Fiie’s Cafe has opened TWO more outlets! One is located at Toa Payoh and the newest outlet is located at Holland Drive!

Wow this uncle & auntie shop still there. Last went there was at least 6 years back patiently waiting for them to deep fry the chicken.
