We received a tag on Facebook awhile back. It was for a video featuring something (REALLY) unique – Duck Egg Char Kway Teow! The aptly (and punnily) named Quackteow was making waves. But… this delicacy was to be located all the way in Kuala Lumpur. The good news – we were visiting KL the following weekend for a family event!
Obviously, we made plans to visit the famous Sedap @ TTDI Food Truck haven where Quackteow was located. Despite having a pretty heavy (and quite late) lunch of Nasi Kandar, we still soldiered on because we could not pass up this chance. Who knows lah when would be the next time we came up to KL 😛
FACT: We’d tried to visit Sedap @ TTDI before but as usual, always got something that comes up. So this would actually be our first time visiting this famous Food Truck enclave that was popular for anyone looking for grub. And this time, our mission was clear.
After finding a table, I took a quick recce to try and find Quackteow. I saw all sorts of big and fangled food trucks selling all sorts of delicious food. But I could not spot Quackteow ? Were we at the wrong location? So I went back to the table and let my Darling Wife have a crack. And she found it 😛
The reason I didn’t spot it? No, my eyesight is perfectly fine. But I was looking at food trucks! Quackteow was amazingly doing this out of what was more of a mobile food stand! POWER SIA!
Quackteow specializes in one thing – CHAR KWAY TEOW!
But not just your average typical plate of CKT…
Yes, their Char Kway Teow has got the usual trimmings like prawns, fishcakes and taugeh (beansprouts). Add in some of their special sauce (apparently made up of Kicap ABC and a few other secret ingredients) and you’ve got yourself a pretty mean plate of CKT. But they’re not done yet.
Instead of using just Chicken Eggs (which they also have btw), they add a special ingredient for that extra WOW factor – they use Duck Eggs! I’m no expert but what I do know is that Duck Eggs are higher in protein and have bigger yolks compared to their chicken counterparts! (But also means more cholesterol so go easy if you’re watching those levels okay!)
On top of that, they also use the ancient (and power) skill of charcoal cooking to add even more “HEY!!” in your Wok Hei!
They have 2 items on the Quackteow menu so we ordered both 😀
This was a good serving of Char Kway Teow! And generous too for the RM10 price tag!
If you’re planning on ordering some other stuff from the other food trucks, you can probably share this between 2 people. But if you love your CKT, one person whack also can LOL
Once it’s all fried up, you’ll probably be hard-pressed to determine which one is Duck Egg and which one is Chicken Egg. Once you gobble up a mouthful or two then you’ll probably be able to tell the difference thanks to the slightly grainier texture and definitely larger amount of egg in your CKT!
The bottom line is that this was a more than decent serving of Char Kway Teow that’s worth the visit. It’s got a really unique twist thanks to the Duck Eggs and of course the Charcoal cooking method is totally boss.
But I’m most impressed with the fact that these guys are running a good, honest business out of a pushcart. They’re sweating it out in the heat and whipping up some awesome food. It shows that if you have an idea and work hard on it, you can make magic. They, and all hawkers, food truckers, food stands and whatever else you can think of, deserve thumbs-up and all of our support ?
There is PLENTY of awesome food at Sedap @ TTDI (which we will hopefully cover in future). But when you visit, even if you’re having something else, go say Quack to the abangs at Quackteow ?
