[JEJU] Baghdad Cafe & Restaurant 제주 바그다드카페&레스토랑

Tandoori Chicken

And we continue on our special coverage of our recent trip to South Korea! We were extremely honoured to be invited by the Jeju Tourism Organization to go on a trip to South Korea and explore not just the interesting spots to visit but also the interesting places to makan!

We’ve covered the bits in Busan and now we’re onto the island of Jeju 제주도! ?

(BTW – head down to our Instagram profile page and watch all the IG Stories from the trip!) ??

So we had some Indian food when we were in Busan remember? Well, we’re doing the Jeju edition this time 😀 And even though there’s a big (and very obvious) Halal signage outside of Baghdad Cafe & Restaurant 제주 바그다드카페&레스토랑, it’s not quite your typical token Indian restaurant.

As soon as we stepped in, you could tell they were going for a very laid back vibe at Baghdad Cafe & Restaurant. It was actually kinda like a make-shift jazz cafe/restaurant with cool tunes playing over the sound system and people just generally chillax-ing with some good Indian (and a little Middle Eastern) food.

And of course, you’ve got the usual suspects ready for feasting!

Tandoori Chicken
Chicken Makhni
Lamb Curry
Naan

The dishes we ordered were a little different from what we’d normally go for I guess. But whatever it is, you’ve gotta have the Tandoori Chicken right! The weather was still super chilly when we visited for dinner so a piping hot serving was very welcome!

I thought it was Butter Chicken at first glance but apparently the dish we had was called Chicken Makhni (it tasted a lot like Butter Chicken anyways lah). And last but not least, we also had some Lamb Curry which was not really a curry to me. Kinda reminded me a lot of Lamb Kurma or something along those lines.

Whatever you choose, it all goes down well with some freshly baked Naan!

Chicken Mushroom Soup
Fruit Salad
Lassi

Okay lah so I kinda regret not taking a look at the menu for myself. Would have a better idea of other interesting stuff to order. Because besides the main dishes, we only had like soup and some salad (which is okay lah).

PRO TIP: If you’re a fan of Lassi, the one here is GOOD!

Overall, I’d say that the food at Baghdad Cafe & Restaurant 제주 바그다드카페&레스토랑 is worth the visit. Also because it can always be quite a hassle to look for Halal food and this is one of the more popular choices. Just a word of advice though – it can be a bit of a squeeze inside so try to go light if you’re visiting.

Sit back, enjoy some tasty food and soak in those jazzy vibes in Jeju 🙂

A Quick Word About Halal Food In South Korea

So in case you’re wondering, it’s (thankfully) getting easier to find Halal food in Korea these days. It may be particularly easier to find it in big cities like Seoul but cities like Busan and Jeju are doing their best as well.

You may see some of these labels when you visit restaurants that are suitable for Muslims to visit. They have 4 main categories that determine the ‘Halal-ness’ of an eatery. This is to be expected lah I guess especially where the Halal food scene is still developing.

The 4 categories are;

  • Halal-certified (safest as the eatery is certified Halal by the Korea Muslim Federation)
  • Self-certified (basically means eatery is Muslim-owned)
  • Muslim-Friendly (serves Halal food but may serve alcoholic beverages) *most common*
  • Pork Free (eatery does not have Pork but may serve non-Halal meat and/or alcoholic beverages)

It may seem complicated with 4 categories but as always, we can simplify it. Do your due diligence and do not be afraid to #AskTheQuestion especially since you’re travelling. Halal is an individual responsibility so get the info and make an informed decision. Look for these labels at the door. If there is any doubt at all, best to give it a miss ?
