We all love our desserts for sure and these days, there’s no shortage of choice π From traditional to modern to fusion, we’ve all got our favourites. For me, I personally tend to favour more traditional desserts these days. Maybe I’m just a sucker for old-school sweet treats.
One of my favourites is Cheng Tng! And I’m sure you’ll agree with me, it can be pretty hard these days to find a Halal/Muslim-owned one around. Well, fret not! We’ve got one for you right here and it’s located at the most unlikely of places.
Serangoon Gardens is a popular hot spot for makan and lepak with friends and family. There are plenty of choices in the area but let’s face it – within Serangoon Gardens Chomp Chomp Food Centre, you won’t find many Halal options. Well, you now have at least ONE!
Ayman-Alam Desserts is a stall that churns out one thing and one thing only – delicious, traditional Cheng Tng! Mr Fong, a Muslim convert, owns and mans the stall. It’s his special Cheng Tng recipe that we’re enjoying π
Oh how I love my Cheng Tng!Β β€ So many treasures to uncover as you slowly sip and savour on that sweet, cooling ‘soup’. The word is that you’ll find more ingredients here than in your average bowl of Cheng Tng. Up to 11 to be exact!
As I sip on my Cheng Tng, I can tell that Mr Fong has put a lot of work into this dessert. In fact, I learned that he personally prepares everything himself and this takes him around 4-5 hours just to get everything ready. Take about meticulous dedication!
Something else I noted is that the Cheng Tng at Ayman-Alam Desserts is not overly sweet. After all, this IS supposed to be a somewhat ‘healthy’ and cooling dessert right? π
You can opt for the Hot or Cold version for your Cheng Tng of course. The Cold Chng Tng may be the remedy for a scorching hot day (which is pretty much every day lah!) but I find it just gets diluted when the ice melts. Just for the record, I prefer the HOT Cheng Tng!
You’ll find all your favourites in there – pearl barley, white fungus, lotus seeds, dried longan (my fave!), winter melon, sweet potato, red dates and even dried persimmons! Let’s not forget the much-coveted Gingko nuts! I also found this clear, jelly-like treat in my Cheng Tng – found out it’s actually Peach Resin which is apparently really good for your skin π
That’s Mr Fong in photo above. Don’t be confused okay LOL I like I mentioned earlier, he’s a Muslim convert and the mastermind behind Ayman-Alam Desserts. He apparently doesn’t have prior experience as a hawker but he’s doing really well now I’d say! He actually started making Cheng Tng because it’s his wife’s fave dessert! Well, it looks like he’s perfected his recipe and ready to share his Cheng Tng with everyone.
There’s only 1 size if you’re eating there – the $2.80 bowl is hearty but don’t be shy to get 2 bowls for yourself if needed π If you choose to takeaway, there’s the $3.50 and the upsized version at $5.00.
There may not be many Halal makan choices in Chomp Chomp itself but plenty in the surrounding area. So whether you makan-ed Mamak food or Satay in the area, be sure to head down to Ayman-Alam Desserts. Let’s show some support to our hawkers!
Plus, this is a bloody good bowl of Cheng Tng π
