Asam Pedas Claypot Super

Asam Pedas – the legendary dish that we all know and love ❀

Awhile back, we found a new way to enjoy our Asam Pedas – in a CLAYPOT! But the thing is that it was not available here in SG and we had to travel across the Causeway to JB to satisfy our claypot cravings. Well, that has all changed now…

Oh yaaaassssssss! You can now enjoy Asam Pedas in a claypot right here in Singapore! Just head to a place called… Asam Pedas Claypot Super! (Yes, their name gets right to the point LOL)

There’s just something that’s extra shiok about food cooked/served in a claypot. Everything is bubbling and steaming hot even as you tuck in to the delicious serving. This dish definitely fits that bill when it comes to this and everyone knows it which is why we flock to Malaysia for this πŸ˜›

And it gets even BETTER!

Asam Pedas Claypot can actually serve your Asam Pedas with a wide variety of fish. This is quite impressive considering you get maybe 2-3 choices of fish across the Causeway in JB. Fish varieties include popular ones like Ikan Merah (Red Snapper), Seabream (Ang Ko Li), Ikan Pari (Stingray) and even Ikan Tenggiri (Mackeral).

PRO TIP: You can even enjoy fish like Ikan Duri and Ikan Sembilang with your Asam Pedas here! But it’s best for you to call (at least a day in advance) so they can purchase and prepare the fish – especially because freshness is of utmost importance!

Well anyways, we enjoyed some Asam Pedas Claypot!

Asam Pedas Kepala Ikan

Asam Pedas Ikan Pari

So how do you order at Asam Pedas Claypot? We’d highly recommend you order a set meal. That comes with pretty much all you need for a feast and you can even choose how big you’d like the set to be. The set meal also comes with side dishes and condiments but you might wanna add some extras too πŸ˜€

We enjoyed some Asam Pedas Kepala Ikan which I’m sure will be a big favourite with everyone. Recommended fish for this serving would be Ikan Merah (Red Snapper) or Ang Ko Li (Seabream) which is also what you’d enjoy with a nice Fish Head Curry. There’s still fish meat of course and plenty of picking to be done. I salute those of you who enjoy a good fish eyeball once in awhile πŸ˜›

Our 2nd claypot was with Ikan Pari. the fish was definitely fresh in both cases!

Set meals are also very reasonably priced. It’s $25 for 2 pax, $30 for 3 pax and $35 for 4 pax as stated on the menu. If you have more people, let them know at the counter and I’m sure they will be happy to recommend what would be best for your group size πŸ˜€

Telur Ikan

BONUS! We also enjoyed some Telur Ikan (Fish Roe) with our Asam Pedas!
Hands-up if you’re a fan ?‍♀?‍♂

The Asam Pedas gravy itself was actually very nice. At first taste, you’re gonna get hit with that sour flavour that gets your appetite going. And then, the spicy flavour comes! It’s not SUPER spicy lah to be honest because that would just kill the flavour of the fish and this dish overall. The beauty of Asam Pedas is that balance between sour and spicy.

In fact, Asam Pedas is quite versatile and you may even find different versions of it especially in Malaysia! My brother-in-law (aka Lee Min Ho) did make quite a notable comparison that this version did remind us a lot of some Asam Pedas we’d enjoyed in Malacca (and quite different from the one we enjoy in JB!).

Pineapple Salad
Sambal Belacan

Stir-Fried Vegetables
Sambal Terung

Along with your Asam Pedas set meal, you also get a few extras on the side to enjoy along with your claypot delights. But I reckon you’re gonna wanna order a few extra side dishes too (because it all just goes together so well!).

So besides the Asam Pedas Claypot and white rice, you also get 3 default accompaniments – Pineapple Salad, Salted Egg and Sambal Belacan with Petai. I think you’ll agree with me that these are perfect along with your Asam Pedas lah right πŸ˜› That Pineapple Salad is super tasty and is perfect to cut through the sour-spicy flavour of your Asam Pedas.

The set meal also comes with a choice of 1x vegetable (because. eat your veggies!). We decided to try 2 – the stir-fried Kobis (Cabbage) is a standard choice and the Sambal Terung was not bad also.

I think other suitable side dishes would probably be a nice Telur Dadar. For the vegetables side, I could not help but think that Taugeh with Ikan Asin would also have been a perfect fit for the meal. (PS the Telur Dadar is on the menu but they don’t have Taugeh with Ikan Asin. Yet.)

Ayam Goreng Berempah
Sotong Hitam

Here are a few hard-to-resist side dishes you’ll probably wanna order too πŸ˜€
Start your meal (while they lovingly prep your Asam Pedas) with some Keropok! Everyone can share-share and can dip-dip with the Sambal Belacan!)

Who can say no to some nice hot Ayam Goreng Berempah right? #DeepFriedGoodness that’s perfect to go along with your Asam Pedas! (The menu only states chicken wings but just ask the counter when you order okay!)

A dish that they’re very proud of is their Sotong Hitam. I’m personally not a fan but everyone else at the table helped attack it LOL If you’re a fan of this traditional Malay dish, be sure to give it a try!

Satay ($0.70 per stick)

In case you’re looking for something extra or perhaps looking for something the kids can also nibble on, they’ve got Satayyyyyyyyy! πŸ˜› The usual suspects – Ayam, Lembu, Kambing and Babat!

After whacking all the Asam Pedas, we still found space for the Satay lah πŸ˜€

The Asam Pedas Claypot is fired up to order so you’re guaranteed of a bubbling hot claypot full of tasty and fresh Asam Pedas every time. I know you’re gonna be tempted to snap photos and videos but try to enjoy it while still hot for maximum SHIOKNESS!

The staff at the stall are also super friendly! If you see Abang Shukri there, be sure to say hi and he’ll be happy to have a chat and make some recommendations πŸ˜€
