Everyone’s favourite haunt for top of the pops British grub – The Mad Sailors – has undergone a bit of a facelift recently. When the Covid-19 pandemic hit, it pretty much put everything in a tailspin but The Black Hole Group chose to look on the bright side and took the opportunity to make a few upgrades here and there.
Not only has the interior been modified but so has the menu – it is now segmented into several unique sections! It may seem strange at first but you’ll kinda get the drift of the new vibes at The Mad Sailors by the end of the post, don’t worry.
So please allow us to run things down for you..
Presenting – The Mad Sailors in 2021 and beyond π₯
The ‘From the Boiler Room’ section of the menu is where you’ll find all your delicious food options. There are 4 sub-sections and we’re starting at.. Start. (See what I did there)
I’ve had Burrata before and I absolutely love it. But truth be told, I’ve never had it quite like this! We’re probably used to enjoying this cheese as part of a salad (with some heirloom tomatoes!) but here, enjoy Burrata in its pure form. Savour the creaminess of this Italian cheese and you’ll find the perfect contrast when paired with the sweet peaches, honey and fennel on the dish.
There are 2 other options in the Start section. One is Sourdough which you can pair with either Chicken Liver Pate or their own special Compound Butter (we went for the latter). And the other dish you might fancy is…
The most popular (and welcome) addition to the menu at The Mad Sailors appears to be the Oysters! This pair of beauties are served with a splash of white Balsamic, green apple to cut through that sharpness and a little caviar to complete the decadent feels that come with enjoying oysters π
As popular as the Oysters are, let me gently remind you that we are still on the Start section. There’s plenty more where that came from!
Next up from The Boiler Room is the ‘Sea’ section where the best of the ocean is on offer.
I am normally not much of a prawns kinda guy but I really loved the Garlic Prawns! FUYOH the fresh Tiger Pawns smothered with that smoky, buttery garlic really hit the right spots in the flavour department. There’s even TWO types of garlic on there! If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, the Octopus might be worth a try. Given a simple grill so it’s still tender and you get to enjoy those flavours.
Other options in this section include the classic Mussels & Clams and the Grilled Whole Barramudi.
Next up is the ‘Land’ section and you’ll probably find one of your favourites in this section.
I’m saying that because I found mine π
ZOMG THESE LAMB RIBS! Maybe it was the Marmite glaze. Maybe it was that tender bite. Well, whatever it was – it’s definitely one of my fave dishes on the entire menu. The toughest part for me was having to share this dish with others LOL! Take it from me- this is a MUST HAVE!

The Flat Iron steak (aka the Oyster Blade steak) may not be a cut you see very often. Sure, it may not be as prime or popular as your other cuts of steak but it’s more than enough to get your meat-loving fix and that’s for sure. This Black Angus Flat Iron comes with onion jam, Jus and more than a few watering mouths.
The Mad Sailors is still sticking to some tradition so you’ll still see the quintessential Scotch Egg on the menu. I actually had not tried the original iteration during my last visit (before the big change-up) but based on the description, it seems.. different. You’ve still got a runny egg but this time encapsulated in minced Chicken Tikka instead of beef sausage. Well, no complaints here because it was still bloody brilliant. Paired with some Mint Chutney for good measure.
And now, we come to – the MAINS! π
The dish that comes to mind when I think about The Mad Sailors is, without a doubt, Fish And Chips. After all, there was a plethora of Fish & Chips variations on their old menu if you can recall. Well, they’ve narrowed the list down to just… one. And it may very well be the best of the lot to be honest.
A beauty in the Atlantic Cod (my fave choice for Fish & Chips!) with that flaky flesh and fresh, clean flavours plus a perfectly crisp battered coating. Fingerling potatoes, classic Mushy Peas some salad and creamy Tartar sauce round off this signature dish. You can’t go wrong with this one.
I was totally blindsided by this dish I am not going to lie… In my mind I was thinking “It’s just some Roast Chicken” but I ended up saying “WOW THIS IS SOME ROAST CHICKEN!”.
The British-French influence shines through here to great effect. Very flavourful chicken that’s so tender that you could do with just a fork. The bird rests on some ultra-smooth Pomme Puree (which is actually the classic accompaniment) with some Broccolini and King Oyster Mushroom on the side. There’s also the ominously named ‘Green Sauce’ that you’re supposed to drizzle over the King Oyster Mushroom. Don’t ask me what’s in it – just eat it LOL
Last but definitely not least is the BIG ONE. It used to be only available on Sundays but now, you can enjoy The Roast anytime you’re hankering for the works.
You’ve got a nice aged Bull Ribeye, Yorkshire Pudding, Brussel Sprouts, Tomato Confit, Potatoes, Cherry Tomatoes, Mushy Peas, King Oyster Mushroom and some Onion Jus. Everything you need one one plate! And to be honest, don’t be afraid to share because that means everyone can enjoy more of everything.
Here’s a little bonus round for y’all before we round off with desserts and drinks. A few suggestions for sides to go along with your other dishes and some of them I’d highly recommend.
Brussel Sprouts – you either love ’em or you hate ’em. I happen to love ’em so I was ecstatic to see them on the menu and even more ecstatic when I found out they tasted absolutely divine with garlic, caramelized onions and some Balsamic reduction *drool* You might also wish to consider the Broccolini and the Truffle Potato which is a bit of a spin but should still appease those Truffle Fries fans out there.
The other ‘Earth’ components we did not get a chance to sample were Baby Gem – a salad of Romaine, Cured Egg Yolk (which you might recognize from Tipo!), anchovies plus other goodies and the Masala Gobhi which is their spin on cauliflower with lemon and a butter Masala sauce (think Butter Chicken but with cauliflower!)
Wash down your feast with some refreshing beverages, you must (channeling my inner Yoda there). Some really interesting ones as you can see from the photo above and that means something for everyone. From the creamy to the sweet to the.. spicy?
You will also see some very enticing desserts like the Eton Mess and Carrot Cake which are both very nice. But I’m going to give you one of the best pieces of advice I can give you at a time like this – order the Chocolate Torte. You’re welcome.
You’ve seen a few changes here at The Mad Sailors and you’ll probably see a few more at the other brands under The Black Hole Group. But no matter what they change, I find that some things stay the same… great food and amazing service. And that’s the real winner right there.
