Tok Tok! π We all miss the authentic flavours of home whenever we’re overseas right? Well, we have an abundance of Indonesian food here in Singapore right? But you know that a place is doing something right when it earns the plaudits as a truly authentic Indonesian dining experience. And it doesn’t have to be a high-end affair.
Tok Tok Indonesian Soup House opened its first outlet in 2016 and now has a total of 3 outlets islandwide. They are famous for serving up a dining experience as good as you can expect to get at any restaurant or street corner in Indonesia.
Their menu boasts soups, rice and noodle dishes – some of which you may never have heard of let alone tired before π Well, we had quite a spread so let’s break it down shall we!
Soto is a familiar name right? But I don’t many of us (including me!) have this version before LOL For one, instead of the familiar chicken, this is a Beef noodle dish!
It’s actually packed with plenty in this bowl including 2 types of noodles – yellow noodles and tang hoon! There is also the tender beef, plenty of vegetables and something that I thought was a ‘popiah’ but turned out to be stuffed with more tang hoon LOL The best part is the flavourful broth that’s a joy to slurp down π
And speaking of slurping down… Pretty sure there are plenty of Oxtail fans in the house right? The version at Tok Tok definitely boleh tahan!
Tender meat on the oxtail along with the hearty beefy broth. Best enjoyed piping hot and with some white rice on the side! And don’t forget the sambal! I’m actually more of a fan of Buntut Bakar which is not on the menu at Tok Tok. BUT I did see that they have Buntut Goreng which I believe I will try on my next visit π
In case you’re not feeling like noodles, here’s a couple Rice dishes that you might fancy (and are definitely gonna fill you up LOL) First up – the Nasi Campur Bali.
This is definitely a platter to consider if you’re aiming for a one-and-all meal. It’s got all sorts of goodies there and at $9.90, is definitely more bang for your buck! It’s got a generous serving of rice, Balinese Beef Rendang, Sambal Chicken, Sambal Dendeng (the OG Indonesian style sliced beef one not the Geylang Bazaar one LOL), Sambal Balado Egg, Sweet & Spicy Sambal Tempeh, some veggies and a Beef Sate for good measure. FUYOH ENAK BANGET!
The only thing missing was a… Perkedel! π
PS they also have and impressive looking Nasi Kuning on the menu too.
PRO TIP: I’m a big fan of Sayur Asem so I highly recommend for you to get a bowl to enjoy with your Rice dish π
The Ayam Bakar seems like something that’s really simple.
But honestly – sometimes, simple is best!
This is really some amazingly tender chicken that’s been coated in a sticky, sweet and spicy chili kicap. Enjoyed with tempeh, tahu, veggies and sambal much like Ayam Penyet (which is also on the menu). But dare I say it – the Ayam Bakar probably trumps the Ayam Penyet in this case. I’ll even go as far as to say this was one of the best things I ate that afternoon!
Soto Betawi is REALLY famous in Jakarta. It originated there thanks to the Betawi people and I’ll be super honest and say that I’d heard of it before but never really tried it.
The main difference you’ll notice between Soto Betawi and other types of Soto is that it incorporates milk – apparently both coconut milk and fresh milk – into the broth. This is normally a Beef soup and enjoyed with rice π It’s still got a very hearty beefy essence to it and the coconut milk gives it a very rich flavour which pairs very well.
Another MUST HAVE on the menu at Tok Tok is the Sate Ayam!
Tender chicken has been grilled on skewers and totally bathed in a very smooth (and almost creamy!) peanut gravy! Topped off with some fried shallots for extra kick and some Lontong (Rice Cake) on the side.
At the end of a hearty meal, it’s time for something sweet to ‘cuci mulut‘ as they say. Some snacks to end (or maybe even start) your meal are always a good idea π
If you’re looking to cool off from the heat, check out the classic Es Cendol! A mix of Cendol (Pandan Jelly) and Jackfruit sit atop a bed of ice that’s been bathed with some gula melaka. The Cendol was EXCELLENT andΒ really great quality! Silk smooth and creamy! But I do with thay’d add more Gula Melaka though (said the guy with a sweet tooth LOL) They’ve also got a Durian version with the Es Cendol Durian and Es Cincau too by the way.
An alternative would be the Roti Bakar which looked really awesome when it arrived. Toast with cheese and chocolate can’t be a bad thing right? Was a bit on the dry side though and I feel a bit of condensed milk would have picked things up (the guy with the sweet tooth speaks again! LOL)
You’ll also find a warmer at the counter filled with some hot goodies including Bakwan Jagung and Pisang Goreng. Enjoy with some hot coffee or tea for a snack!
I would be a fool not to remind you to get some refreshing beverages while you’re tucking into yout fave Indonesian dishes at Tok Tok. Case in point – SODA GEMBIRA! π
One of my all-time favorites! And I have to say that I was very pleasantly surprised to see a Coca-Cola variation here (is it just me who’s never seen it before??). This was SEDAP GILER! I guess there’s just something about Coca-Cola lah especially mixed with condensed milk π
And don’t worry – they have Sosro Teh Botol (would be a crime if they didn’t!).
I have to say that this was a really pleasant first visit to Tok Tok Indonesian Soup House! The ambiance was really authentic (check out the decor when you’re there!) and there was plenty more on the menu that I was interested in trying (that’s right I’m looking at YOU – Mie Ayam Bakso) and I reckon I might do that soon since they have 3 outlets islandwide now.
Besides the original one at 313@Somerset, they also have one at Ann Siang Road (perfect for the working crowd!) and their latest one has opened recently at Paya Lebar Square! I can see why this is such a big hit with everyone and this is a great chance for you to experience it for yourselves π
