The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf: Carbonara Fettuccine

Many many many many years ago, my Darling Wife and I tried a pasta dish from The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. I can even specify for you that it was at the outlet located at Changi Airport Terminal 2 (yes, it’s still there) and it was some kind of creamy mushroom pasta dish.

And yes, it was really bad. It was so bad that we actually have an running joke about how ‘delicious the pasta at Coffee Bean is’. Yeah sure, no doubt their beverages are tasty and refreshing but the food hasn’t always been up to scratch so to speak.

But after we tried some dishes from their All-Day Breakfast menu, things appeared to be looking up!
And so, one day, we decided to give Coffee Bean another shot at a pasta dish.

I’ll go ahead and saw that it actually looked pretty appetizing when the dish arrived all steamy and hot at our table and I actually was really looking forward to a tasty dish of pasta…

There was actually nothing wrong with the taste. It wasn’t very spectacular to be honest but it did have some flavour and I’ve always been the creamy pasta sauce kinda guy so this was right up my alley. But….

Despite looking the part and having a decent taste, that’s about where it ends.

The basic ingredient in a pasta dish is – the pasta. And this has to be cooked properly.
And in this case, we have Fettuccine which is a flat noodle.

I’m sure pretty much almost everyone has heard the term Al Dente right? Well, even if you’ve heard it, you may not know what it actually means. It’s actually not complicated, it just means ‘firm to the bite’ (i.e. to the teeth in literal translation from the Italian language). This basically means that the pasta is not overcooked or undercooked.
Al Dente means it’s in the range of being cooked almost, if not, perfectly.

Well, the pasta here was mushy.
Yes, after talking so much I’m sorry to disappoint you that the pasta was overcooked so it became a little bit to soft and not the texture you’d expect to enjoy your nice creamy pasta dish.

Adam’s Verdict:
Carbonara Fettuccine 1.5/5

Maybe it’s my own fault for even considering ordering another pasta dish at Coffee Bean. But hey, I simply had to so I could prove if the theory was true or not.

Plenty of good stuff to have at Coffee Bean that’s for sure. Some people might actually enjoy the pasta at Coffee Bean but I reckon we’ll be ordering other stuff and NOT the pasta from now on.
