Siam Kitchen

Ever since the new Eastpoint Mall re-opened at Simei, we’ve been making plans to visit. The reasons being that 1) we used to visit pretty often until it was closed for renovations and 2) we’d heard there were quite a few nice places to grab a bite at the newly re-opened mall.

Well, the prefect opportunity to visit arose and it was to a place we’d honestly never heard of before… Well, Siam Kitchen previously did not have any outlets in the East but they’ve got one now at Eastpoint! But just how power was this place known for serving authentic Thai food?

Well, let’s find out!!

Prawn Cakes with Lemongrass Sticks ($8.90)

First up were some starters! How about some Prawn Cakes with Lemongrass Sticks (Goong Pun Takrai)!
So we’ve got a pretty familiar dish here and it definitely gets the passing mark from us. The prawn cakes were tasty and deep fried goodness! (Bread-crumbed and deep fried anything is probably nice to us LOL)

The fresh and sweet flavour prawn meat really shone through here. Even if you dip it in the Thai chili sauce, you’re still going to be able to enjoy the naturally tasty prawn cakes.

Anyways, you also have a choice of other starters like Thai Fish Cakes, Deep Fried Spring Rolls, Thai Chicken Satay and also Crabmeat Omelette.

Great start to the meal so far!

Spicy Grilled Beef Salad ($9.50)
Spicy Grilled Beef Salad ($9.50)

Okay so here’s where things start to get spicy!

The Spicy Grilled Beef Salad (Yam Neua) is a good choice for all of you seeking to start with something that’s gonna turn up the heat at the start of the meal. This is labelled as a salad and great for sharing but please don’t be fooled okay! This unassuming dish looks harmless but it’s got a spicy kick to it… SHIOK!!!

It’s got some grilled beef slices tossed in with some veggies and a special spicy Thai salad dressing and let me tell you this one really no joke!

That is literally a picture of me starting to sweat a few minutes after starting on the Spicy Grilled Beef Salad. You all know how it goes right? First you feel the heat in your mouth. Then your head and scalp starts to feel hot too and then suddenly little droplets of sweat start forming. And then… you dig in for more of the spicy food cos it’s damn shoik LOL

But seriously, if you’re a fan of spicy food – this is a MUST try!

Other salad choices on the menu include Pomelo Salad with Prawns, Green Papaya Salad with Soft Shell Crab (!!!) and the classics Spicy Mango or Papaya Salads.

Red Tom Yum Soup with Seafood

You know confirmed we’re gonna have some Tom Yum Soup whem we’re having makan at a Thai restaurant right??

Well, we opted for the Red Tom Yum Soup with Seafood (Tom Yum Talay) this time. So far, the spiciest Tom Yum we’ve had is the clear version but this one also can tahan! You can also have the version with Prawns (Goong) if you’d like.

Good and robust Tom Yum flavour here but not as spicy as one might expect. Or maybe we were still feeling the effects of the Spicy Grilled Beef Salad? but it’s still tasty nonetheless. I mean, everyone loves Tom Yum right?

Thai Olive Fried Rice with Minced Chicken ($10.50)
Thai Olive Fried Rice with Minced Chicken ($10.50)

Here’s a dish I had for my main and it’s a dish I’m very familiar with because it’s something I order very often whenever we’re holidaying in Phuket (which is pretty often actually). I’ve had 2 versions – one is the Shrimp Paste Fried Rice and this one is the Olive Fried Rice.

The Olive Fried Rice itself has a very unique and tasty flavour. This is of course best enjoyed with the minced chicken (which has been fried in together with the rice in this case) and the assortment of accompanying condiments including chili padi!!

Other rice dishes include the all-time popular Minced Chicken/Beef Basil (Phad Kra Prow Gai/Neua) and Honey Sesame Fish / Chicken (Khao Na Pla / Gai) just to name a couple.

Not a fan of rice, then maybe some noodles for you? Further down got one noodle dish 🙂

We also enjoyed quite a number of dishes with steamed white rice too by the way.

Soft Shell Crab in Mellow Yellow Curry ($16.50)
Soft Shell Crab in Mellow Yellow Curry ($16.50)

The Soft Shell Crab in Mellow Yellow Curry (Pu Nim Phad Phong) was very interesting (in a good way of course).

We’d only recently started trying Thai curries during our recent travels to Thailand they are definitely growing on us! But to be honest this would be the first time we were trying a Thai curry that is deemed to be non-spicy. Normally it’s Thai Green Chicken Curry (Gaeng Keow Wan Gai) or Thai Massaman Chicken Curry (Massaman Gai) – which are also on the menu by the way – so it was interesting to try something new this time.

So what did we think of it?

I don’t think anyone is going to mind that the curry is not very spicy because it’s actually pretty tasty. Besides, there are plenty of other dishes to more than make up in the spicy department so this was a nice departure.

I think it was a good idea that they serve the curry and the soft shell crabs separately. This is so you can enjoy the crisp and perfectly-fried soft shell crab in all its glory. So you can spoon the curry onto your rice and take a nice big mouthful and then take a nice big chomp of that soft shell crab!

Butterfly BBQ Chicken ($14.50 for half / $19.50 for whole)
Butterfly BBQ Chicken ($14.50 for half / $19.50 for whole)

Here’s one of our favourite dishes from the whole meal!

The Butterfly BBQ Chicken (Gai Yang) was absolutely delightful! And why exactly do they call it ‘Butterfly BBQ’?
Well, in order to roast it perfectly, they skewer the chicken on both left and right sides and the spread it open so it’s opens up fully and kinda resembles a butterfly!

So this bird is roasted absolutely perfectly! You can see how perfect it looks with the slight char on the skin and the meat was super duper tender we are not even kidding! Fork-tender and it is great to have with rice or even just on its own if you ask me.

They serve this dish with 2 type of chili sauces.
The first one (the darker one above) has some elements of shrimp paste while the other has some tangy flavour with lime juice. Anyways, both have generous amounts of chili and fish sauce so you’ll get the heat and also the craving to keep having more and more. The perfect accompaniment to this power BBB chicken!

They actually have LOADS more chicken dishes on the menu too by the way.

Well, besides chicken, they’ve also got a whole selection of Seafood dishes like Steamed Garoupa with Spicy Garlic Lime Dressing (Neung Manao) (!!!), Fish Head in Tom Yum Curry (Tom Yum Hua Pla).

Stir-Fried Spicy Kway Teow with New Zealand Beef and Holy Basil

So the Stir-Fried Spicy Kway Teow with New Zealand Beef and Holy Basil (Pad Ki MaoKuey Teow Neau) Thai version of Dry Beef Hor Fun (technically) but definitely a level up in terms of the flavour and definitely the spice level! You’ve got everyone’s favourite flat noodles stir-fried with some tender pieces of New Zealand Beef.

Throw in some veggies and also one of the best ingredients ever in Thai cooking – Basil leaves – and you’ve got another winner from the Siam Kitchen menu for sure. Perfect if you’re looking to skip rice or perfect for sharing if you’re planning to tuck into more side dishes!

They’ve got like 10 other noodle dishes including Seafood Phad Thai (Phad Thai Talay) and Traditional Beef Noodle Soup (Sen Lek Neua).

Iced Lemongrass Tea ($3.90)
Iced Lemongrass Tea ($3.90)
Thai Pina Colada ($5.50)
Thai Pina Colada ($5.50)

Lots of choices on the beverages menu too but we went with something classic and also something a little more ‘trendy’ LOL

Both the Iced Lemongrass Tea and Thai Pina Colada were tasty, refreshing and perfect for quelling all the effects of the spicy food we were enjoying!

But they actually have so many other interesting choices too! How about the Homemade Thai Sour Plum? Thai Iced Milk Tea? and something REALLY interesting called the Butterfly Pea with Lime!! Hmmm maybe next time. but of course, we had plenty of space for dessert 😛

Thai Red Ruby with Ice Cream ($6.90)
Thai Red Ruby with Ice Cream ($6.90)

One of the most familiar and popular Thai desserts is Thai Red Ruby with Ice Cream (Tap Tim Krob) am I right or am I right? Little red rubies (made of sago and water chestnut) along with jack fruit slices and ice-cream!! Confirmed power!

Banana Tempura with Hot Caramel Sauce (7.90)
Banana Tempura with Hot Caramel Sauce (7.90)

Something with some Thai elements but with a bit more of a modern twist is the Banana Tempura with Hot Caramel Sauce (Klua Tod Ice Cream).

Some deep-fried banana fritters here and drizzled with some hot caramel sauce and some raisins too for good measure. Plus some ice-cream on the side in case that wasn’t enough for you LOL this is actually a pretty big serving and just nice to be shared by 2 after a big meal. Unless you’re really hungry lah then go for it solo if you’d like.

IMG_8771

I wasn’t such a big fan of the ‘tempura’ coating to be honest and would have preferred maybe the bananas to be caramelized or something a long those lines. But having said that, I can see why this would be a big hit with a lot of people with it’s crispy outer-layer and hot bananas waiting within the batter

FACT – All the chefs from Siam Kitchen are native Thais. That’s right. Not foreigners trained in Thailand. Not specialists in Thai cuisine. These are the real-deal Thai cooks from Thailand they’ll probably know more than a few things about how to dish out power to the max Thai dishes.

We experienced this first-hand and it makes us wonder why we didn’t visit Siam Kitchen earlier!
It’s got a very extensive menu with plenty of very interesting and yummy dishes that we’d probably need a few trips to go through it! Plus it’s actually very reasonable priced too!

They’ve even got student deals, lunchtime deals and dinnertime deals all kinds of deals going on from time to time so you should definitely check and head down. You’re guaranteed a hearty and satisfying (and fiery) Thai experience!!

Check out Siam Kitchen’s outlets located at Eastpoint, Lot 1 Shoppers’ Mall, City Square Mall, Nex and Bukit Panjang Plaza ASAP!

As they say in Thai – AROY MAK MAK!! (aka VERY VERY DELICIOUS!! aka SEDAP GILA!!) LOL
