Old Chang Kee Coffee House – A Tasty Heritage

Flower Bread with Curry Chicken ($11.90)

The story of Old Chang Kee is an interesting one. It’s also one that shows that if you are willing to work hard to follow your passions, that’s the path to building a legacy. And a legacy that is beloved by the masses no less.

A story that started in 1956 took a turn for the amazing decades later and the rest, as they say, is history. Today. Old Chang Kee has outlets not only in Singapore but even in the UK, Australia, Indonesia and Malaysia!

I’m not sure if you’re old enough to remember the original Old Chang Kee stall located at the Old Rex Cinema along Mackenzie Road? Well I know I’m not 😛 but this is the exact spot where Old Chang Kee started and this is the place it returns to! That’s right – their flagship store is located at the same spot where it all began.

A history that spans more than half a century! Well, fast forward several decades and a countless curry puffs later, there’s plenty more on the menu!

Flower Bread with Curry Chicken ($11.90)

I seldom do this but I’m going to start with what I feel is a MUST HAVE. This is not touted as the signature item on the menu here at Old Chang Kee Coffee House but it might as well be.

The Flower Bread with Curry Chicken with not only photogenic (or ‘Instagram-able’ as most put it these days :P) but pretty darn tasty too!

The bread was exceptional. Soft, fluffy and perfect for celup-ing in the Curry Chicken 😀

It arrives nice and hot and that’s exactly how it should be enjoyed. Don’t be afraid to get right in there and tear it apart with your bare hands because that’s what it was meant for! And don’t worry if you run out – you can always buy extra if you need. This portion is perfect to share for 2 pax!

The Curry Chicken was delicious and creamy. Best part – the gravy is FREE FLOW so when you’re running low, let the staff know and they’ll top it up for you! Anyways, the Flower Bread is also served with their Beef/Chicken Stew and Sesame Chicken!

Dry Laksa Goreng ($8.50)

Next up is a series of noodle dishes that showcase the local flavours we all know and love.

First up is the Dry Laksa Goreng. It’s basically a.. dry version (like duh) of your favourite Laksa. I actually found this a bit lacking in the flavour department. Maybe because I was comparing to its (normally) more lemak-y OG cousin. Well, might as well have that then 😀

Laksa ($5.50)

Okay so I got my Laksa craving fulfilled! But I realized that.. they don’t use any coconut milk in this! (No coconut milk in the Curry Chicken too apparently!) Definitely a healthier choice and you can indulge without worrying too much.

Mee Siam ($5.50)

Next up is the Mee Siam which was actually quite satisfying 😀 The gravy is not too tangy but you are still able to enjoy the saltish-sourish flavours we all love about Mee Siam. Don’t forget to add extra sambal if you wanna go for the extra fiery kick!

And in case you’re wondering, YES they also have Mee Rebus on the menu too 😛
(Also saw Mee Sua on the menu too if I am not wrong)

Nasi Lemak with Dry Curry Chicken ($8.90)

Hainanese Chap Chye ($6.20)

There are actually plenty of rice dishes on the menu at Old Chang Kee Coffee House too. Highly recommended is the Nasi Lemak with Dry Curry Chicken which I actually quite enjoyed.

It may not be your usual serving of Nasi Lemak but it’s got plenty of goodies including fish cake and Achar Timun. And the sambal is SHIOK! I didn’t realize it at first but the Dry Curry Chicken is actually pretty much similar to their famous Curry’O filling! Just more chicken and less potatoes 😛 And trust me – that’s a good thing because we all know how delicious the Curry’O is!

If you are looking to pair your rice dishes with a side dish, Hainanese Chap Chye is highly recommended!

Baked Beef Stew Rice with Cheese ($10.90)

They have Beef Stew (and also Chicken Stew) on the menu which you can enjoy with rice. But if you’re looking to put a bit of a Western twist on it then they have Baked Rice with Cheese options for both the Beef and Chicken.

The Beef Stew is delicious and adding cheese definitely takes it to the next level. After all, you can seldom go wrong with cheese right LOL Anyways this would be perfect especially for the kids!

If you’re just looking for snack, you’ll obviously get your fill here too. They’ve got all the favourites like your Old Chang Kee Classics, Dip ‘n’ Go and Bun Times to choose from as you sip on your favourite Kopi or Teh..or hot Lemon Tea for that matter 🙂

A wide selection of their Curry Puffs and other favourites like Carrot/Yam Cake, Sotong Balls and Fried Squid Head among others. Actually, I never realized how shiok the Chicken Wings from OCK were until I tried them here. No wonder lah always got people queuing to buy! 😛

Oh wait! I almost forgot about dessert!

Bubur Cha Cha ($5.00)

Check out the desserts at Old Chang Kee Coffee House! They’ve got classics like Bubur Cha Cha and Cendol and also some new favourites too like Banana Split and Cendol with Durian Ice Cream too 😀

As you can probably tell, there is so much variety at Old Chang Kee Coffee House. There’s surely something for everyone to enjoy no matter what the taste. Enjoy your nostalgic flavours in a nostalgic setting (they even have a heritage corner that’s perfect to show the kids about the good old days!).

Old Chang Kee has come a long way and with the flagship store, it’s a one-stop shop to experience everything the brand has to offer. The iconic location makes it all the more special.
